Saturday Morning Rockpile:

Sometimes, I'm happy to admit my errors. One case in point would be the Rockies' pre-season decision to keep Cory Sullivan and let Jeff Salazar get away to Arizona. My thought was that if you've got to make a choice between two similar players, might as well keep the cheaper younger one who you have control over for a longer period, even if you have to pay more on the front end by letting the larger contract go. Last night Sullivan earned a good chunk of his money. Actually, he should have earned a good chunk of Yorvit Torrealba's money, as his two hits were nearly enough to make up for Yorvit's ineptness.

Because of Torrealba and our general lack of getting runs across early, that game nearly became one of this season's most gut wrenchingly disappointing, ranking with our May losses to the Royals or the Pirates series of last week. Instead, it became one of our more satisfying efforts of the year and I can only hope the effects carry over to these next two. We might have some help in that cause by facing a starter with an MLB ERA north of twenty today. The Diamondbacks' choice of experimenting with Dana Eveland in their rotation for the stretch run shows that they are similar straits to us in regards to starters. He has pitched well in Tucson the last couple of weeks, though.

Wow
Well, they did it before my eyes on the 24th, so I pretty much knew they had won as soon as Silverblood started heading for my room after checking the score. Not to say I wasn't completely convinced that they would lose after the 3-run homer in the seventh - I guess I was pretty convinced they'd lose on the 24th, too.

Now, play Iannetta tonight. Watching Torrealba hit was painful.

The ump was calling some weird pitches, too...just a little inconsistent. Another frustration to add to a game that was piled high with them till the end.

Torrealba ... groan
I cannot stand Yorvit Torrealba.

Yes, the man had some clutch hits for the team early in the season.  But he stranded 4 runners in scoring position last night, didn't even manage a hit, and was just a wasted 4 outs.  That, and his defense isn't exactly something I'd like to have behind the plate or throwing to second.

Ianneta has been steady since his return.  Put him in, see if he can give some pop to an offense that Torrealba has lost.

Torrealba
The Hurdle's man crush on veteran-ness needs to go.  It's the same thing that happened with Spilborghs & Finley/Mabry.  We know what Torrealba is going & not going to give the team.  Iannetta potential is so much more.  Why is he not starting?

Anyone know who was called up with Sept 1 call ups?

A bit much
I think that people seem to be over-reacting to Yorvit's slump.

While he is most likely the type of hitter that we have seen throughout his career (rather than the hitter that we saw for an extended hot streak earlier this year) that still makes him a valuable player (not to mention better than any catcher we have given significant playing time to in the last few years).

When Yorvit got hot it made little sense to play a struggling Iannetta but now that Yorvit is in a slump it makes little sense to play him such a large majority of the time.

Err...
Squeaking by Colorado State won't put put any shake into the Trojan boots. CSU had open receivers the entire second half and it's leading receiver on the day could have had an even bigger day had he not run out of gas at the end. The CU pass defense is still atrocious and it's collective tackling, outside of Dizon, left a lot to be desired. When you see a safety trying to tackle a guy who has about 25 pounds on him by jumping on his back and hoping something good happens, you have a serious problem. That same guy got mixed up in coverage later and allowed a 3rd & 15 to turn into first and 10. CU mismanaged the clock at the end, taking away opportunities to score at the end. They also had three drives start well onto CSU's side of the 50, resulting in a whopping 6 points.

I'd say CU has a LOT of work to do just to reach 6 wins.

And I'm a CU fan, so I'm not an angry CSU guy venting about missed opportunities. I'm just not delusional about the Buffs.

Oh, granted
it's a great win, and I'm super excited about it. It's just a really long way to go. Big and Little Hawk managed the clock really well in the first half, and then mangled it at the end of the game. The end result of both drives was a field goal, but the chance to win at the end was there if the clock was handled better. I gotta give Big Hawk kudos, though. Going for it on 4th was downright ballsy. Little Hawk doesn't look like a RS freshman at all. We need a Colorado Buffs blog =/

I wouldn't go that far
the pass defense needs work, but Wheatley went untested for most of the game, and he did a very good job baiting the QB into that interception in OT.

The interior pass defense, namely the atrocious play of the linebackers in coverage and the the safeties (although Walter was decent), is in trouble, but we don't really know what Wheatley can do against good receivers yet.

Wheatley was really good
and the way he snared that pick in OT was marvelous. I'm excited for him to face some real competition, but with the other guys on the field, why would a team throw his way? I'm a big fan of Ryan Walters, but I think the Buffs snuck away with one today because there were some open receivers that were just a tad overthrown that would have sustained some drives deep into CU territory. You're right on about the linebackers. The middle of the field was pretty open today.

Jones
Yeah, Jones in coverage was a disaster. :(

Aha!
I couldn't remember the kid's name! Thank you. On a brighter note, Maurice Lucas looked pretty good. His second sack was more a product of the other side of the line working well and Walters timing his blitz nicely, but his first one was definitely a good play.

CU/CSU
Glad to see CSU almost pull that one out.

Call-ups
Don't know if anybody's seen this, but Jeff Baker, Willy Taveras, and Joe Koshansky have been added to the active roster on the Rockies official site.

I wondered if Koshansky would
get the call after Paulk was moved to AAA.

I'm not sure who was moved off to make room for Koshansky on the 40-man.  I don't see Arias on there, but can't remember if he was on the list recently.

Arias was removed from the 40-man
Think he was DFAed after the Dessens signing, if I remember right.

The roster was at 39 before Koshansky
It's at 40 now.

Someone will need to be taken off for Dan Serafini though (assuming he's called up).

Koshansky
Activated INF/OF Jeff Baker and OF Willy Taveras from the 15-day disabled list; purchased the contract of INF Joe Koshansky from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
