Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

Game #160: Francis vs Webb

So what began so fitfully in April starts winding to a conclusion with the same two teams on the same field. It's kind of like a samurai movie, where a pair of n00bish acolytes square off at the beginning before taking their long journeys of growth into true warriors, becoming mortal enemies along the way and then meeting one final time for all the glory. And the Padres would be the old master, I guess, kind of wisely waiting on the sidelines and hoping that D-backs and us sort of kill each other off so they can reclaim their crown. Okay. I feel good about this series now, because if this is a samurai movie, then we are the underdog that wins.

We are the team that lost that first clash, we're the team who's true superiority has been overshadowed by the sneaky dealings of the Snakes in front of us, and we're the team that comes home battered, beaten, weary and with hardly a prayer of victory because the odds are still stacked so heavily in their favor. Let's give this fairy tale the ending it deserves, then. Let's take down the Snakes, one game at a time, starting tonight.

Go Rockies!

Hoof boy
So worried. Excited as hell, and awfully tired from systemically depriving myself of sleep, but this IS a fairy tale that not even a hack Hollywood screenwriter would buy as plausible (well, maybe, Kevin Costner always needs work, I suppose) and let's finish it. Let's do this. Let's come home to the screaming love of our fans and win the biggest game in Rockies history, ever.

GO ROCKIES!!!

I can't remember being this excited
for a game in quite some time...the media is giving Bob Melvin all kinds of props for moving Brandon Webb tonight, but I can just feel that the Rox are going to light him up tonight. Coors Field will be electric and this team is going to be jacked up.

LET'S GO ROX!

Big start
Let's tack a few on Webb and get the D'Backs reeling.

They're young and chances are they'll press.

Also, anybody else underwhlemed by the crowd thus far?  I know it's an early start in the Rockie mountains, but I was expecting a playoff atmosphere early and there's plenty of green out there.

I'm actually glad we will miss Owings
According to VORP, he's their fifth best hitter, and basically Ryan Spilborghs in offensive value.

So what you face is a solid mid rotation guy that also gives them an AL batting order.

Not that I want to face Webb, but Owings could be dangerous here.

because it isn't really Holliday
the swing is looking worse and worse, and we're just hoping he can hit a few bleeders and bloops to hold the average, and then have them pitch to him based on reputation.

Webb can be hit tonight
He's got his good stuff, but his command isn't all there.  One run won't win this thing for the D-Backs.

Let's knuckle down here Jeff.

by BroJB @ Purple Row on Sep 28, 2007 6:42 PM MDT reply actions

That was weak Yorvit
I can't help but think Yorvit plays right in to Webb's hands, he has no discipline and hits up on his front foot too much.  Webb can get him to chase the sinker all day knowing that when he does make contact he'll just dribble it to the left side.

He's played so much lately, maybe Iannetta would have been a better choice tonight.

by David OhNo on Sep 28, 2007 6:43 PM MDT reply actions

At least bat Yorvit eighth
The way Cory's been swinging the bat against RHP's this year, I think he would have been more suited to the seventh slot in the lineup.

by Silverblood on Sep 28, 2007 6:51 PM MDT reply actions

Only if
you really feel Francis is an ace.  On the scouting scale, he's an easy number three and a borderline number two.

I also think this is only brought up when he struggles and not when he's succeeded, as he has on our recent streak.

by David OhNo on Sep 28, 2007 6:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Francis is without a doubt
the ace of this team, and has come up with a number of really brilliant pitching performances.

But he does seem to be a little less steady tonight, and that's not what you hope to see out of your own team's #1, regardless of where he falls in comparison to others -- we don't have them pitching tonight.

Um
Bucky is a questionable choice for a shutdown inning, seeing as he only pitched yesterday for the first time in 1.5 years.

And now he's got a guy on third with only one out.

unbelievable.
How in the world can we win 11 games straight, and NOT move ahead of anyone.  Sure, we noticed this before, but it hurts much more now that we win 11 of 12 and nothing really to show for it.

Insane.

Among others...
...how about the couple games that LaTroy Hawkins couldn't hold early in the year, Yorvi's homer turned double that could have won us another game in philly, losing three out of four to the pirates and nats in august...losing two out of three at home to the marlins...

It kills me to have seen just how close the Rockies have come to being the best team in the National League, and how a loss tomorrow probably ends the playoff dream for this year.

The margin for error is so small in this game...

This blows
I live in a suite with seven other guys at school. Most of them are Cubs fans. Needless to say there is much rejoicing on my floor right now. All except for in my room, where I have dimmed the lights and am playing that sad piano melody from the Charlie Brown shows on loop, trying to drown out that obnoxious "Go Cubs Go" song.

Weekend
Don't forget Padres-Brewers is an afternoon game tomorrow, so we'll know ahead of time if SD loses.   I know, fat chance the way Brew Crew is folding. If we can get to Sunday still alive,  we've got Suppan for Brewers vs. Tomko (4-11). It is not over for a Wild Card tie with the Padres; Mets could be in the picture too.

by DeepPurple on Sep 28, 2007 10:07 PM MDT reply actions

No reason to feel bad about this.
Sure, it's not ending the way we hoped, but here's the good news:

This was not a desperate run made by a team of aged veterans.  It was not a one-time shot at glory.

This is the beginning, not the end.  For the first time, we'll go into the off season with visions of world series contention dancing in our heads.  No longer will the national media either ignore us or denigrate us.  No longer will we be begging for other team's table scraps.

There have three Rockies franchises:

  1.  The early success story, which culminated in the '95 playoffs
  2. The small market also-rans, ingored by the national media -- and, let's face it, most Coloradans.
  3. The team that may very well enter the '08 season as the favorite to win teh National League Championship.  The team taht will pack Coors Field night after night next season (and hopefully beyond) and be able to keep it's prodigious homegrown talen.
The team that will win a world series in teh next 3 years.

Welcome to phase 3. folks.

All good things
must come to an end. It was a helluva run though. In the spring of '06 I predicted a losing record for '06, winning record but no playoffs for '07, and NL, and possibly World Series, Champs in '08. It looks like I got 2 of 3 right so far, let's hope I'm as accurate about next year as I was in this year and last.

Hey...
Who jinx the team?

It wasn't me... I did everything today the same as I have the past 12 days.

And since the streak started on a day I didn't have time to jump in the shower.. I, for one, am glad its over.

kidding...

Anyway, bummer of a loss. Lets get 2 more and see what happens.

by roxhead on Sep 29, 2007 12:30 AM MDT reply actions

They played themselves to the point they had
to be perfect the last two weeks to get a shot. They may go 13-1 and still fail.  Better game management needed for 08.  You cannot expect to go 14-0 in today's baseball.  Too much mediocrity.

That D back lineup  is pretty much a disgrace but the won the division, despite being outscored, outhit, out defended.

Is the age of baseball when bad teams make the playoff (see St. Louis last year).

by PinchHitLancePainter on Sep 29, 2007 7:44 AM MDT reply actions

Err..
Just for the sake of defending the Cardinals, whom I've followed pretty much since birth, they weren't so much a bad team but a good team that had a bad first half.  They were the best team in baseball for most of the second half and did everything right in the playoffs.  Now the Padres making the playoffs with barely a .500 record based almost entirely on their pitching...now that's a bad team.

by raoulduke1977 on Sep 29, 2007 8:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Except you'd hope they would get a LITTLE help.
Even to the tune of one or two games. The Padres have played a bit above the pace most experts predicted two weeks ago, which was them finishing at 88 games.

by potterhead4 on Sep 29, 2007 10:47 AM MDT up reply actions

Come on
There's no point in sounding like a sore loser.  The Rockies had a great, improbable run in the late season.  The Diamondbacks have been just as improbable all season.  That's going to come down on Arizona's side in the long run.

Besides, I don't think trashing the Diamondbacks does much to bolster up the Rockies- they have split the season series so far.
