Game #162: Yusmeiro Petit vs. Ubaldo Jimenez

Today must feel oddly familiar to U-Ball since he also started the last game of the 2006 season.

Since then we've been through it all. The Jason Jennings trade upset some fans, but clearly the Rockies won that deal. Move ahead a little bit to Opening Day and we survived LaTroy Hawkins meltdown in the eighth. We saw the first of Brian Fuentes' blown save opportunities in April. Then, a few days later Troy turned an unassisted triple play in a game Matt Holliday won with a walk-off homer in the 11th inning.

Then May arrived and we had the game that shall not be mentioned. Kaz returned from an injury the next day, and despite a loss in that contest, the Rockies would go on a seven-game win streak that ended during a four-game series against the Cards. June would come and Josh Fogg and Jeff Francis picked up wins in a three-game series against the Red Sox. They also accounted for two of the three wins against the Yankees (Rodrigo Lopez had the other).

After the sweep of the Yanks at home, the Rockies entered that 1-9 stretch that included the heroics of Troy and the destruction of Brian Fuentes as closer. After what appeared to be crushing disappointment, the Rockies came back to sweep the Mets at home and took two of three against the Phillies to end the first-half of the season at 44-44.

To start the second half, the Rockies hovered around .500 for the rest of July, which included a three-game sweep of the Pirates only to lose three of the next four to the Nats. For August, the team never dropped more than two games in a row, and they never gave up, not when Cook, Hirsh, and Lopez went down with season-ending injuries, and certainly not in the 14-inning, 5+ hr. marathon the Rockies played against the Dodgers on Aug. 18. Right after that, though, things still didn't look that bright since the Rockies lost three of four to the Pirates, but rebounded to sweep the Nats in three games.

September became magical after the series against the Phillies and Marlins. Having split the four-game series with the Phillies and losing the first two games to the Marlins, the Rockies seemed poised to play spoiler for the rest of the season. But the guys would have none of that. A team record 11-game win streak vaulted the Rockies back into playoff contention. Todd's walk-off homer to win the second game of a double header against the Dodgers and the 2-1 14th inning road victory over the Padres highlighted that stretch of games.

And now it all comes down to this game. Go and get them U-Ball (and hope for a Padres loss)!

Go Rockies!

I don't know
it's frustrating, but it isn't like the Brewers and Giants have caused us to lose 73 games this year.

As surprising and successful this season has been, our guys are still to "blame" for being put in the position to require help from others.

Fogg
It might sound funny, but of all the available guys we've got... Fogg sure doesn't have more talent than Frankie, but Fogger's the one guy that won't let the pressure of the one-game playoff affect him. Hell, he never lets ANYTHING affect him. A certain level of calm and focus is just as important in a situation like this, and I think that's what Fogg gives us.

year end stats
I see Ryan Howard picked up 3 RBIs, enough to pass Matt for the lead (136 to 135).  Sounds like Matt will have to pick up at least 2 tomorrow to win that race...

Howard also finished with 199 strikeouts.  WOW.

Jimmy Rollins got a triple today, giving him 20 on the year, along with 30 HRs, 41 SBs, 38 doubles, 94 RBIs, 139 runs scored.  What a year.

Stats for Game 163
All stats do count for regular season tomorrow.  Saw something over at ESPN.com that Holliday would have to go 0-5 Monday to lose the NL batting title.  Ryan Howard pulled ahead in RBIs today, 136 to 135; would like to see Matt get that back tomorrow, also see Tulo getting his 100...but the big W is all that really matters.

Living on a college budget I did not care one bit how much they cost. I cannot wait for tomorow! I seriously will not sleep well tonight. This is one of the best days in my sports fan life. Also, Fogg is the right choice to pitch tomorow. Like many have said, he doesn't get rattled in big games, and if he struggles out of the gate you go right to Morales.

Rockies have to go with Fogg
It's not fair to the team, or to the 21 year old to have him pitch on short rest for the first time in his career.  They've already kept the prep work to a minimal with these two rookies, so giving him a crash course in short rest pitching and mental prep would be a big gamble.

All things being equal, Fogg gives us our fourth best chance to win this game, but they don't play these games in a vacuum and the Padres won't wait for us to rest our best pitchers.

The bottom line is that we had no business winning 13-14 down the stretch, and we have no business defeating the Cy Young winner in  a winner-take-all-format with a number five starter.  Yet, we had the audacity to accomplish the first task and at this point, you can't rule out anything with this club.

by David OhNo on Sep 30, 2007 5:24 PM MDT reply actions

But I think it goes without saying...
Frankie has to be available for tomorrow, right?  I mean if Fogg, God forbid, just doesn't have it, Frankie has to be the call, right?  I'm scared to death either way, but we'll have to see what happens.

Today was awesome!!!
I was out in section 156 and it was a blast today, but I nearly had a heart attack.  Did it sound like the noise level was up there for those that watched it on TV?  It felt loud.  I know we went crazy when the final was posted on SD and Mil.  We had several good chants of MVP for Holliday.  From the talk of the "experts" on ESPN it sounds as if it is a given that Rollins will take the MVP, and not sure of Tulo's chances, especially w/ his avg dropping below .290.

I have class at 9:30 tomorrow
I haven't gotten to bed before 3:30 for a number of days, and I don't think I'll sleep that much tonight.

2 AM here
And I can pretty much tell sleep won't be coming tonight.

Thank goodness my 9AM class was canceled.

Lucky
I won't be worth much in tomorrow's class. I've already skimmed the texts with no hope of comprehension.

I am making signs that say "PEAVY SHMEAVY" and "PEAVY LIKES COLDPLAY"

Tonight, when or if I sleep
it is in an Atkins T-shirt beneath a Rockies blanket and a wall covered in Rockies things.

Tomorrow I will sport a Rockies shirt, jacket, jersey, necklace, hat, and purse. At 7 pm, I will be  meeting with my friend Nick to watch the game. I love them enough to lay my whole heart on the line for them, and dream and hope for glory, because they have earned it.

GO ROCKIES!!!!

Milwaukee roots for you
After the stinkin' Pod knocked the Brewers out of the playoffs, we are more than happy to have put Sad Diego on the brink. GO ROCKIES. You had a great season and a fantastic ending.

Good luck in the playoff(s).

Now do you really think Matt Holliday will win the MVP over Prince Fielder? ;-)
