Game #162: Yusmeiro Petit vs. Ubaldo Jimenez
Today must feel oddly familiar to U-Ball since he also started the last game of the 2006 season.
Since then we've been through it all. The Jason Jennings trade upset some fans, but clearly the Rockies won that deal. Move ahead a little bit to Opening Day and we survived LaTroy Hawkins meltdown in the eighth. We saw the first of Brian Fuentes' blown save opportunities in April. Then, a few days later Troy turned an unassisted triple play in a game Matt Holliday won with a walk-off homer in the 11th inning.
Then May arrived and we had the game that shall not be mentioned. Kaz returned from an injury the next day, and despite a loss in that contest, the Rockies would go on a seven-game win streak that ended during a four-game series against the Cards. June would come and Josh Fogg and Jeff Francis picked up wins in a three-game series against the Red Sox. They also accounted for two of the three wins against the Yankees (Rodrigo Lopez had the other).
After the sweep of the Yanks at home, the Rockies entered that 1-9 stretch that included the heroics of Troy and the destruction of Brian Fuentes as closer. After what appeared to be crushing disappointment, the Rockies came back to sweep the Mets at home and took two of three against the Phillies to end the first-half of the season at 44-44.
To start the second half, the Rockies hovered around .500 for the rest of July, which included a three-game sweep of the Pirates only to lose three of the next four to the Nats. For August, the team never dropped more than two games in a row, and they never gave up, not when Cook, Hirsh, and Lopez went down with season-ending injuries, and certainly not in the 14-inning, 5+ hr. marathon the Rockies played against the Dodgers on Aug. 18. Right after that, though, things still didn't look that bright since the Rockies lost three of four to the Pirates, but rebounded to sweep the Nats in three games.
September became magical after the series against the Phillies and Marlins. Having split the four-game series with the Phillies and losing the first two games to the Marlins, the Rockies seemed poised to play spoiler for the rest of the season. But the guys would have none of that. A team record 11-game win streak vaulted the Rockies back into playoff contention. Todd's walk-off homer to win the second game of a double header against the Dodgers and the 2-1 14th inning road victory over the Padres highlighted that stretch of games.
And now it all comes down to this game. Go and get them U-Ball (and hope for a Padres loss)!
Go Rockies!

Fogg
I'm actually not surprised by this; it would be asking a lot of a rookie.
I'm good with Fogg
if he falters, you bring in Morales. You can use pretty much everyone but Jiminez, as a matter of fact.

year end stats
Howard also finished with 199 strikeouts. WOW.
Jimmy Rollins got a triple today, giving him 20 on the year, along with 30 HRs, 41 SBs, 38 doubles, 94 RBIs, 139 runs scored. What a year.

Rockies have to go with Fogg
All things being equal, Fogg gives us our fourth best chance to win this game, but they don't play these games in a vacuum and the Padres won't wait for us to rest our best pitchers.
The bottom line is that we had no business winning 13-14 down the stretch, and we have no business defeating the Cy Young winner in a winner-take-all-format with a number five starter. Yet, we had the audacity to accomplish the first task and at this point, you can't rule out anything with this club.
But I think it goes without saying...
If we have to throw caution to the wind
I just think that since we can take a measured approach to start the game, it should be Fogg with a relatively short leash.
Just got back home
Oh yeah, and this:
WE DID IT!!!!!

"Ladies and gentlemen," he began, "welcome to Coors Field for Game Three of the National League Division Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and YOUR Colorado Rockies!"...
"You've gotta be kidding me. We're in the playoffs?"
"Yep. Wild Card winners, with an 85-77 record...
"85 wins was good enough for the Wild Card?"
"Well, San Diego finished with 85, too, but we got them in a one-game playoff. That was a hell of a game. Had this place rocking..."
Doo-doo-doo-doo
P.S. Jimenez is actually slated to throw Game 3 after Francis and Morales in Games 1 and 2
