Beyond the Rockies

Well, at least the Rockies didn't go in the wrong direction by bring Elmer Dessens back after his August-September stint with the team. That honor goes to the Pittsburgh Pirates, who signed Dessens to a minor-league deal yesterday. According to the article, it's a good bet that Dessens will make the team as a reliever, even if more pitchers are brought in. How long has Pittsburgh been rebuilding?

Back in November the Angels and White Sox swapped Orlando Cabrera for Jon Garland. Maybe Tony Reagins and Kenny Williams would do business again. Early yesterday morning it looked as if something might occur: Paul Konerko to the Angels for Ervin Santana and Howie Kendrick, or Chone Figgins and others in another package. Then Kenny Williams denied any discussions with the Angels. If Williams isn't just using GM talk, like Reagins did in the second link, well, I wouldn't want to be that source in the article. Casey Kotchman and Kendry Morales must be breathing a sigh of relief right now.

Beyond the Boxscore interviewed Paul DePodesta, currently a special assistant in the Padres front office.

Dex from Gaslamp Ball started a new blog on SB Nation, Uncommon Sportsman, which covers sports you don't think are sports. Beer pong, parkour, comedy endurance--not sports.

If only for the photoshopped picture of Kenny Williams as a ninja, it's worth a look for his take on the rumors.

So it's been what, 5 days since the last story involving the Rockies?  Someone in the PR department needs a whoopin' for that.  It's the dead season right now for Denver sports, and there's a huge opportunity to even get fluff pieces out about these guys...  Build excitement and all that jazz.

How's this for news
The Rockies have had full page adds in the Denver Post on Saturday and Sunday on the back of the sports section.  The big push: Opening Day tickets...but this year with a twist...you can't buy JUST opening day at the moment. (I expect opening day singles will go on sale later) You have to get a 2 game opening weekend package, and choose from Saturday or Sunday game in addition to our HOME opener (we open on the road this year) game Friday afternoon.

Personally, I think this is a wise marketing idea.  It's all about selling tickets.  In a series I read "call sell the last seat in the house" It basicily states you want to group tickets fans WANT with those they don't want.  Which makes even the the bad game a hard ticket to come by, which will make fans pre-purchase more packages of either season or mini-plans.

Want another kicker? I usually buy in the Right Field box....Face value for a regular game there last year was $18-22.  This year? $26-$35 Thats right kids you read that right.  Right field Box Opening Day/weekend package price for ONE ticket to Opening Day, and one to Sunday: $76 (Prices are cheaper if you buy a mini-plan 15 or 25 game package, or cheaper still if you buy the full 81 game season package)

As a Fan I think this sucks....only so much cash in my pocket to go around....with $4/gallon gasoline this summer, I'm not sure I'll have much extra cash.

Welcome to big league baseball.

so much for
taking the family out to the old ball yard on a hot summer day. baseball as a whole needs to work on ticket prices so fans can see a game not just corperate crap and junk same thing for football also.

glad i get paid minumum wage to go to the games boom baby

At least the broncos dont totally suck

Re: ticket prices
Go do your shopping at King Soopers, folks. They've got a deal where you can buy four seats for 8 bucks a pop, and the seats aren't bad (left or right field corner in the lower level, pavilion, or anything in the upper deck).

At least, that was the deal last year. In previous years that deal was four tickets for two bucks each. I'd imagine it might increase again for this season.

But hey, if we're going to pay more to go see a game, I'll call it even - we are, after all, paying to watch the defending National League champions.

Did see this...
Ah, the good old days, where a bored twenty-something could take a walk down Blake Street, talk to a scalper, pick up a pair of tickets down the third base line for $20 each to watch my 10 games under Rockies...

Yeah nevermind, I'll take the pennant.  But you all understand what I'm getting at.  This is about growing a brand, making Rockies fans for life.  C'mon Rockies PR dept., give us something to work with, even if it is fluff about how awesome Tulo is and how proud Silverblood is to be the mother of the baby Tulo's... ANYTHING!

Bahahaha
I somehow don't think that promotion would go over very well.

Apropos of nothing, last night I had a dream that the Raiders beat the Giants in the Super Bowl. Aside from wondering how the hell the Raiders did that, it illuminated to me that I am really ready for some baseball and this offseason is too damn long.... stop me if you've heard this one before.

Get Demented. Mother of the Baby Tulos; subsisting on football until spring. Go Broncos!

Raiders, huh?
Well, the Raiders did once beat the Redskins in the Super Bowl but that was way back when Olivia Newton-John was parading around in leg warmers.  Long before you were born and nothing to worry about.  Try not to eat so soon before sleep.

I was at that Super Bowl
I was 8 years old and went with my Dad.  This is of course when the average person could still get tickets.  I don't remember much beyond the fact I wore my Broncos jersey to the game and we later went to Disneyworld.

Ticket prices
HEY....I want a World Series winner....and $5 tickets from scalpers!  OK, OK, I know it's not realistic.....But I also want to date a super-model.  (though with Brittney Spears moving to Denver to go to Estes Park Rehab, I've jumped higher on that list.....sure she's nuts and all now, BUT so are/were some others I've dated)

I'm not sure what "news" the Rockies should be putting out.  Maybe updates on Holliday and/or Atkins extensions?  Or fluff pieces on Jimenez's dad? Or will we see Helton's facial hair this year?

Opening Day tickets
I think I'm going to try to go to the REAL Opening Day this year... and hope that nobody at Busch Stadium threatens to toss me over a balcony like the last time I was there (HA!  Not really, the guy said they only do that to Cubs fans.)

Maybe...
Sabathia or the O-Dog (if none of our internal solutions work out at 2nd.)  Yeah, otherwise the frre agent class will be another sucker bet once again.  I expect the Angels to spend excessively.

Sorry to be off topic
But I am so missing baseball, I can hardly stand it. Mind you I love college basketball, and sweated through my Tarheels' game against Clemson tonight. And I know I'll become more involved as the season moves on, but heavens. What I wouldn't give to see the boys in purple slugging it out against the D-backs (or anyone else) again.

How far way is spring?

Met this young man with my son at a store in Parker on Sunday.  He was  very gracious and nice.  We had a 5-10 minute conversation about baseball.  He was sorry for the World Series bust.  Told him I was happy they got there.  That we attended about 20 games and several PS games. He is reporting early to Tucson.  I told him how much I missed the Rockies in the off season and how  stoked I was that Spring Training was approaching.  I told him he'll be a key for this season given his ability to close, be situational, perform long relief and middle relief.

Overall I was impressed with him and wished him the best.

Thanks for whomever for the earlier post
regarding rockies games on itunes.  Just watched the 10/1 tiebreaker game - if you are missing baseball I suggest you check these out.  Classic, and only $2 a pop.
