OK, so it's a non-guaranteed deal, waiting to become official after a physical. Spring training position battles, gotta love 'em.

Beat me to it.

Like I was saying in the other thread I almost posted, we don't need second base to be great with the rest of our lineup, we just need it to not be terrible, and this signing raises the odds of meeting that goal.

It's not guaranteed, too, which means that if Nix or Stewart are really ready, we can cut Marcus without guilt.

I like the peace of mind that comes of this.

Neutral Park Projections from THT

Nix .242/.284/.340 (raised to a .249/.293/.360 with Coors)
Giles .270/.336/.385
Stewart .265/.329/.422 (raised to .272/.336/.443)

Keep in mind that the statistics these projections are based off of can't tell if Jayson Nix has figured out how to raise his hands to get them in a better position to drive the ball or similar developmental variations that might affect future performance, so with the younger two, I think you have to take them with a grain of salt.

I think they do demonstrate what a possible low point was before in the Nix line, and why I worried much, and how the possible low has been raised with this signing. Giles would project to about a .750 OPS in Coors, I figure. Nix goes from that a bit below that .650 OPS to up near .800 depending on how optimistic you want to be.

"Insurance" seems about right. Still don't totally get this signing. It seems they are committed to Nix in the starting lineup, and could kust use Stewart as the backup, no? Guess they would like to keep his options at 3B option though, with Atkins a possible trade candiate later next season?

that they're trying to keep Stewart as viable an option at 3B as they can, in case an injury befalls Atkins (or a trade comes along). I like this signing only as insurance in case Stewart or Nix don't pan out. I mean, Giles isn't terrible at 2B; granted, I don't want him to be our everyday starter, but of the 2B choices in the league, we could be stuck with, say Kelly Johnson. As an insurance man, I'll take Giles, sure.

is insurance only. He's an experienced Major League former starter 2ndbaseman.

Nix seems like a forced pick. He might be able to step up....he might not, and may need another year in the minors.

Stewart looks like a long shot too, and really looks to be in the Springs playing 3rd

Baker is still unknown as a major league hitter as a regular player.

Barmes and Quintinella, may be AAAA players (too good for AAA..not good enough for MLB)

So Giles is ok as insurance. I don't like him. I don't think he can hit. I even think he did 'roids and now isn't which is why his numbers dropped. But we know sorta what we can expect out of him. Personally as a no hit, all glove kinda guy, I'd rather have Q then Giles...but that's just me.

you need to give Nix the chance he deserves.

He came through the system and if the personel people deem him ready... he must be ready. He may struggle at times but so does every young major leaguer. I am now hoping Jason Nix succeeds even more.

Keeping Stewart as a 3rd sacker

Also allows him to play the hot corner while Atkins get some more PT at 1st (his natural position) to spell todd so he doesnt have such a work load as he is gettin up there in age.
