Sunday Morning Rockpile:
- Troy Renck, Jim Armstrong, and Patrick Saunders sat down for a roundtable discussion on the Rockies. Jim Armstrong wouldn't be surprised if the Rockies make a run at a FA pitcher during July to put them over the top. I guess Armstrong really means a FA-pitcher-to-be via trade, because any free agent pitcher out there in July won't require any of the extra money the Rockies will take in as a result of appearing in the World Series last season. Though, having to trade for a pitcher to put the team over the top would seem to imply that someone in the back three spots failed to perform up to expectations.
They also discuss the lineup and who poses the biggest threat in the NL West (hint: it's not the Giants).
- Matt Holliday makes a joke:
Matt Holliday, amused by the trash talking between the Mets and Phillies, joked, "I think we should be the favorite in the NL East."
Will Jimmy Rollins accuse Holliday of plagiarism after saying that? - Clint Barmes is taking grounders at third. He believes he'll see some time in the outfield as he also competes for a utility spot in addition to the second base job. Baker received praise from Hurdle after some double play drills.
- John Sickels examines Chris Iannetta:
Basically, if they let Iannetta play, I think he will bounce back just fine [. . .] I think I overreacted to the gaudy numbers at Tulsa. In retrospect, I think my earlier assessment of Iannetta back in 2006 was the right one: he's a .250-.260 hitter (neutral park) in the majors, with enough walks for a nice OBP, some power, and solid glovework. Not a star, but a solid guy.
That's always the catch: if he plays.

Post roundtable:
That said, the Rockies are interested in at least one free agent pitcher (Rodrigo) that might not sign until July, so Armstrong has an escape that will make him seem less foolish should he choose to use it.
I found Harding's article at the official site about Garrett working on his defense encouraging, but it's interesting to note that Gallego thinks he's underrated. The numbers make it pretty clear that isn't the case.

My only change to this
Here's my prediction of your 25 man roster breaking camp sorta...so you can see roster battles (sure it's not quite what the other poster asked for........)
Starters:
Taveras
Tulowitzki
Holliday
Helton
Atkins
Hawpe
Torrealba
2ndbaseman (Nix or Baker)
Pitcher
Bench:
Barmes (Utility)
Spillbourghs (RH OF platoon w/ Hawpe)
Back-up Catcher (Iannetta OR Bellorian)
Lefty PH/OF (Smith OR Podsednik OR Sullivan)
Last Bench Spot: (Baker/Nix loser OR one of the 3 lefty OF's, or Giles or Q if Baker wins and Nix goes back to AAA, or Stewart in a long shot) This one is wide open.
Starting Rotation:
Francis
Cook
Jimenez
Hirsh *
Morales *
Bullpen:
Redman (lefty swing man)
Herges
Buchholtz
OPEN *
Vizciano (7th)
Fuentes (8th)
Corpas (9th Closer)
* Kip Wells looks to have the inside track if Hirsh or Morales stumble, but it's their jobs to lose and their names aren't written in ink. You could see Morales and Redman switch roles if they think Morales needs big league experience but with less pressure of starting. Wells also looks to have the inside shot at the last Bullpen job. Or one of the list of: Speier, Morillo, Ramirez, Clark, Capellan, Newman in that order for the last pen spot. Like Rox Girl points out there is some spots here that can be won or lost.

Morales
However, I imagine the Rockies will attempt to limit his innings this year to around 160-170, to avoid pushing his young arm too much. Rather than shutting him down early, or pulling him after a few innings in games in August, why not leave him in extended spring training (if that is possible - not sure on the rules for that) to build his arm strength more slowly. Then give him a few, low pressure starts in AAA to prepare for a late spring call up.
In the meantime, this would allow one or two of the veteran FA to eat up some innings in April when it is invariably 40 degrees and drizzling rain. I would not want my star prospect on the mound in that weather anyway. That also gives the Rockies the opportunity to showcase one of the veterans as possible trade bait in late spring/early summer as teams around the league experience injuries.
Just a thought...

I wonder if..
Franklin pitched well as a starter until the playoffs when he was thrown off his game by the two balk calls. Which showed me that he still needs a little more maturity to overcome those situations. BTW, Taylor did much better as a reliever than a starter, ERA was around 2.2 as a reliever and 5+ as a starter.

While I've not seen any indication of this
Granted both of these guys were in the AL where bullpens tend me more rested due to the DH.
Personally...I don't see how even a young, inexperienced, easily rattled Morales is worse then an experienced Wells or Towers. Same with Jason Hirsh.

Not related
Odd last name to have 2 pitchers about the same age make it to the majors at the same time.

I Agree
As for Iannetta, I hope he gets a chance. With him not getting to play very much in the Majors last year the best thing for him was to go down and work. This year should be different and I hope he makes a strong case for himself and he gets significantly more playing time. I do not want to see him only on Sunday afternoons in the high heat of the summer.

everyone seems to agree....
Wells hasn't had a WHIP under 1.5 since 2003, he was pretty awful last year and even worse the year before. Towers, on the other hand, is coming over from the AL, which should help his ERA, pitched better than Wells last year (5.27 ERA as starter vs. 6.27) and was actually pretty decent as recent as 2005. I would think that Towers would be the better bet to put up Fogg-like numbers than Wells, yet everyone seems to be thinking Wells is the better pitcher--heck, even the Rockies invested a lot more money in Wells.

I think
Also Wells last year did ok in a few relief appearances (8) last year, which shows he still had something even while leading the league in L's
The point about Towers coming from the AL East could be valid.
Personally I hope we don't have to see either of these guys in the Rotation and Morales comes out this spring, and looks like the Little Johan he can be.

Couple of questions
- How good is Hirsh?? I thought he was the best pitcher in AA and AAA when he was at those stops? Could he suprise us and throw like a #3 or maybe even a #2??
- How much of a window does Stewart have before he gets to be an "old" prospect?? Doesn't sound like he has much of a shot at making this roster. I know he's only going to be 23 just after the start of the season, but he's had 4 years in the minors already.
- Same question for Iannetta? He'll be 25 and if he needs to catch everyday he'll need to be in the Springs.
- Last question - When does the 2007 NL Champs Banner go up!!!!!

I'll give some of this a shot
- well, that's one of the big question now isn't it? I think Hirsh is good, or will be. It takes time to learn to pitch to major league hitters. Hirsch isn't overpowering, but he's almost, which I think is/was part of the problem. In the minors he could over match a lot of hitters..in the bigs he couldn't, and he tried to pitch differently. He's still making that adjustment. I think he could be a solid #3 type pitcher...even a #2. Or he will struggle with command and confidence, and be a #4/5. Personally I think he needs confidence and innings, and he'll be just fine. In fact he could surprise.
- I'll let others have this...but yes his window is closing. Is he still a "can't miss prospect?" I think you could get a nice debate going on that one.
- Window is closing, but the fact the Rockies want him to play everyday in AAA tells me they still see him with a future as a starter. Personally I don't see Iannetta being that good, nor that bad. The fact that he couldn't beat out Torrealba and his hurt shoulder last year doesn't give me much hope.
- I haven't seen but on Saturday of the Opening Weekend the give away is a mini pennant to the fans. I'll say you will see it opening day...and they will make a big deal of it on Saturday. On Monday the promotion is replica rings for the fans..so I'm guessing the ring ceremony will be Monday. But those are just guesses 'cause if you use this logic Tuesday is Hebrew National $1 Hot Dog night, which would be we are celebrating our Jewish ballplayers...or our outlandish flair of play (hot dogging)

another part of the Iannetta post....
Shandler: .259/.347/.406
James: .274/.370/.435
ZIPS: .269/.359/.421
Sickels: .272/.365/.415
Note this was Torrealba's 2007 line:
.255/.323/.376
I don't think we can expect much improvement on Yorvit's numbers from last year, so we should look for pretty much the same.
I'd really prefer to have Iannetta getting most of the starts this year.
