Spring Training Game #18:

By this point in the Spring, most players will be turning in performances that are more regular season in nature. New pitches that didn't work will get scrapped, plays will be run out at close to full speed, and starters (thanks to the cuts that had just been made) tend to stay in the games longer. The performances mean a bit more this week, in other words, and problems that cropped up earlier should be mostly corrected by now.

Ubaldo Jimenez pitches against the Rangers, with Manny Corpas and Brian Fuentes also figuring to see some work.

No audio or video, you can access Gameday from the entry page, or I'm sure somebody has the url to go directly to it (here).

Both Scott Podsednik and Cory Sullivan figure to see a lot of AB's today, batting first and second, as Hurdle needs to make the decision. Ian Stewart plays third and Omar Quintanilla short in a possible preview of Colorado Springs' left side of the infield.

I hope
this trend of not scoring runs doesn't become a habit.

Seriously
What is with scrubs shutting us down? Holliday and Helton may be the only regulars, but that's not an excuse. (Oh, and Yorvit, but that doesn't count).

I wouldn't call
Mendoza a scrub. He's actually turned some heads this spring training and should take over the injured Brandon McCarthy's spot in the rotation.

I'd be nervous if I were a Rangers fan
Spring stats being meaningless and all, but that ERA over 12 just doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence.

If I were a Rangers fan
I'd be used to it. Seeing as their park is the unhumidored AL version of Coors.

Would you rather
have Sidney Ponson? Or The Electrician?

Hey, I'm not saying Mendoza is the only one
that would make me nervous were I a Rangers fan, I'm just saying that their head turning threshold seems lower than ours right now. Unless you were talking about the turning of heads to watch Helton bombs, than I can understand.

Holy CRAP
Every time I bag on Yorvit, he does something!

2-run double... 4-1 now. 5-1, actually (Q RBI single).

And Helton, hearing our complaints
takes it upon himself to fix it! Extra BP helped! 2-run jack, 2-1 lead, and then Holliday with a single. Nice. Much better.

Hurdles strategy of stacking left-handers
against Mendoza didn't work the first time through the lineup, it appears to be a bit more successful in plate appearance number two for most of our guys, it seems.

by Rox Girl on Mar 13, 2008 3:23 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Second time through
Yep, I was thinking the exact same thing. Apparently they all just needed a 2nd try against him. Second time through the order and either he's suddenly complete lost it, or our guys have figured him out.

5-1
after Yorvit drives in two, and then Q drives him in.

Good thing
it was Yorvit who scored off of Q's hit. I wouldn't want the language barrier to stop the two from celebrating.

Nix
seems to be getting hit a lot. I guess he figures it'll help his OBP.

I'll take credit for that
I say something about it and bang! Ta-da!

by Squeaky on Mar 13, 2008 3:25 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually
it had nothing to do with you. At all. It was all me. I bagged on Yorvit and told the regulars to do something. So :P.

Gameday stuck after the Nix HBP
What's going on? Is the inning over, or have we poured it on?

pitching change.
Who knows after that, though.

Ubaldo
Man no balls till the 4th...hes doing pretty well. Granted alot of the batters are swinging early.

by jarish on Mar 13, 2008 3:32 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't trust the balls and strikes
Spring Gameday is hardly ever accurate in that regard.

by Rox Girl on Mar 13, 2008 3:37 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

ahhh
Ahhh...im used to regular season gameday.

by jarish on Mar 13, 2008 3:39 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's understandable
Actually, most of the Phoenix area stadiums have accurate counters, and I think TEP (where the D-backs and White Sox play) does as well, it might just be at Hi Corbett and Peoria that they count one pitch for every out by contact or hit, three strikes for every K, and four balls for every walk. It's as frustrating as heck, particularly when there's no broadcast to go along to know what the truth is.

And there I go jinxing him :(

U-ball bunted, Pods walked
Sully squelched with the bases loaded (groundout to second), inning over.

I'm glad Josh Hamilton went AL
I was worried at the start of the offseason that the Padres would try to pick him up. I think that this turned out much better in the end, the results of this game notwithstanding.

Hmmm
I don't get why Fuentes is untouchable. He's still a good lefty reliever and I'm pleased to have him on the team, but he shouldn't by any means be designated the "zero trade" guy.

His value
will skyrocket following some 'contender' losing a closer to injury or having someone struggle out of the gate. Plus, might as well wait until Weathers is ready.

Leadoff double by Kata
in the bottom of the tenth, and we can't win the game. Grrrrr.

OK, I give up
How can everyone here be so into spring training games? I see we tied, but I couldn't care whatsoever.

by arosenthal on Mar 13, 2008 6:16 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Personally, the results don't matter
Win, lose, tie, it doesn't hurt or get me particularly excited if we do well or not. Okay, so I get a little excited for the wins still. Maybe that's why I like Spring Training so much. You can get absorb all the euphoria when the team does well but just write off the bad performances completely. I just wish I was there.

There's an extra get in that second sentence
I had started the sentence a different way, but only changed half of it. Oops. I need an editor.
