Spring Training Game #23

This figures to be an interesting matchup of two pitchers who are projected to be among the NL's premiere southpaws in coming years in Rich Hill and Franklin Morales.

Morales is coming off of his worst start of the Spring, and a rebound would help ensure he keeps his likely spot in our rotation to open the season. Once again, no audio or video coverage of today's game, this is the Gameday link.

Looks like the scrub crew
I guess they didn't want to truck the regulars all the way up to Mesa.

We're playing the Cubs again
tomorrow at home, so that's when it's televised, and therefore the regulars will probably be playing that one. I'd rather watch the regulars than the scrubs anyway, but beating the Cubs on both ends would be just fine with me. I hate 'em.

This is the game
that I was at last year.  Rockies @ Cubbies up in Mesa.  You know, the one where Tom Martin really showed what he was worth...gave up something like 6 hits in one inning, and was the reason we ended up with a tie.  Made me never want to see him in purple ever again.

Gadzooks
Rich Hill has Noah Lowry disease. 5 BBs to Podsednik, Torre, Baker, Giles, and Stewart all getting free passes, but we only get one run out of it due to Spilly GIDP-ing and Barmes flying out.

On the bright side, Frankie tosses a nice 1-2-3 first.

Gah
Two quick outs and then three fast runs for the Cubs... you have to avoid that, Frankie. 3-3.

Frankie has great stuff but
I still have to wonder about his ability to shake it off out there. He gives up a double, throws a wild pitch, then another double, and lets Blanco of all people hit it out. Tug at the threads and he tends to become unraveled. Oy, I do not like the state of our rotation to start the year. Get better quick, Hirsh, or we WILL see Redman/Towers/Wells all out there...

Another HR for Screamin' Ian Stewart
makes it 5-3. Barmes: thrown out to end the inning. Some things never change.

John Patterson released by the Nats
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080320&content_id=2446486&vkey=spt2008news&fex t=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Considering how volitile our fifth starter situation is looking right now, I think Patterson is worth a look. If he can stay healthy, he's got a lot of potential.

I'm not sure how feasable it would be though, as I think I read he's on waivers. I'm sure some team with a higher priority than us would take a chance on him.

by avsfan4ever33 on Mar 20, 2008 3:15 PM MDT reply actions

I don't think we'll get him either...
But I remember him being passable when healthy.  Right now, passable's good enough.

Frankie isn't exactly allaying my fears out there, I regret to say.

Not an encouraging start for Frankie,
I'm not going to parse this as good in any way, but I'm not sure how much bad we can read into these numbers, either. The homerun was bad, as Mesa's a notoriously poor HR environment (that bodes well for Stewart, BTW) and of the seven hits he allowed, four were for extra bases. This points to a situation that he's leaving too much for hitters to connect with, maybe taking too much off his velocity so they can tee it up off of him. He might have just been high in the zone, however, so I'll be interested to read what Apodaca and Hurdle have to say. Two of those early doubles were "fly balls to center fielder Scott Podsednik" which makes me wonder some more about Scott's defensive range, although Gameday placed them squarely in the gap. All seven hits were

Seven hits is five innings is bad, but in the end, though, the amount of contact wasn't nearly as bad as the damage caused by what contact there was. All seven hits were pulled into left field, so for whatever reason, the Cubs were way too comfortable today. Also, I especially don't like the freebie run he gave up in the third inning, that seems way too reminiscent of other times he loses it after making a mistake and winds up compounding the error.

Manny didn't look particularly great either
4 hits and 2 runs in one inning. Grrr. Cubs hatred in full force.

IAN STEWART HIT HIS 4TH HOMERUN......
tying Tulo for the team lead with 4 and taking the team lead with 10 RBI....plus a LH bat/power threat....what do the Rox do with him and why would you keep Baker over him?  What would be wrong with (although he no longer is in the race) 7 innings of Stewart at 2B and 2 innings of Giles/Barmes/Baker or Nix...whoever survives.

Nothing...
I think the Rockies have to try to deal Baker by the trade deadline to give Stewart a space. Especially considering that they're using Barmes as their defensive utility bench bat and Nix, Tulo and Atkins at second, short and third, it just leaves the infield a little too right handed to begin with. By switching Baker and Stew, they balance that quickly and upgrade the bat at the same time.

by Rox Girl on Mar 20, 2008 8:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Barmes
is horrible. Doesn't belong in the majors.

Just thought I'd throw my $.02 in.

by arosenthal on Mar 20, 2008 9:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Which reminds me,
I find it funny when Hurdle stresses to not put much emphasis on spring when evaluating Sullivan and Pods, but it looks like that is exactly what they are prepared to do on Barmes.  Clint has had something of a bounceback this spring, but if in-season performance means anything, the Rockies should be actively seeking a more credible utility option than Barmes.  Yet, we'll likely hear how a big spring saved Barmes, but an irrelevant spring buoyed Sullivan.  It makes you wonder just how much competition actually exists.

The silver lining in it all is that we're only talk about bats 12 and 13 off the bench.  Bats 1-11 should provide more than enough offense to overcompensate.

I don't think I would
do that to Stewart at this point in his young career.  I think the primary focus for Stewart should be to first light up the PCL at third, and then force his way into a permanent role at the position, either on this club or another, and I say this for two reasons:

One, Ian's having a monster spring (.324 AVG after an 0-fer in two Feb. games), which includes a homer off one of the game's elite closers in J.J. Putz (the type of pitcher that would have eaten him alive down the stretch.  That should give him the confidence to make his presence known in the scouting community, and within the organization.  The next time he leaves AAA, it should be as a major league third baseman.  Because of the Rockies current financial situation at the position, I'm not sure how moving Stewart around the diamond helps make an accurate decision as to how the money should be spent at third base.  You may not think that doing Stewart favors works in the best interests of the team, but considering that O'Dowd still operates with a long-term philosophy, and Stewart's dubious tenure as a late inning pinch hitter, it could be argued that moving him off third everyday could cause more harm than good.

Second, Stewart's highest value comes as either a future starter at third base, or as a trade chip for a needed player.  He's either the cost effective future, or the eye candy of a trade partner.  Using him as a sub half way through the year would not only cut into his development/evaluation time, but could potentially decrease his value on the market.  If Stewart is cruising through AAA, he will look more appealling to trade partners than him fighting for AB's here and there as a second base fill-in.

I just don't think that Stewart has capped his development to the point that spot work should be considered an option.  He's not out of options or over-aged like Baker, or to a degree, Seth Smith.  Instead, he's a 23 year old going back to AAA, which still gives him two years to expect a breakout (ala Adrian Gonzalez).  I think it's too early to take this route, even at the half-way point.  This should simply be the year Stewart either forces his way into the lineup at third, or be sent out to acquire a big piece for another pennant run.

by David OhNo on Mar 20, 2008 11:27 PM MDT up reply actions

I think you probably misunderstood my intention
As it sounds like we're at close to the same view on this. I want to push this proposed trade of Baker after the All-Star break to give Stewart three plus months in AAA to establish himself just as you see it. I think the three plus months will be plenty to show he's ready for full time MLB duty. The spot work after that will only be the second half of 2008 and I'd presume he'd be our starting third baseman in 2009. I see it more similarly to how the Marlins used Miguel Cabrera when they won the World Series yet still had Mike Lowell as their primary third baseman that year.
