Finding a Niche For: Bismack Biyombo

Any scouting report must start with Biyombo's dimensions, which are downright freakish. He measured a 7-7 wingspan (which would rank fifth longest in our expansive database) at the Nike Hoop Summit, despite standing just 6-7 ¾ without shoes. No player of record has ever measured a wingspan that is nearly 12 inches longer than his actual height—the closest is Jason Maxiell, who is 6-5 without shoes with a 7-3 ¼ wingspan. He also sports a chiseled 243-pound frame (4.8% body fat) that he should have no problem putting additional weight onto.

What makes Biyombo so interesting, though, is his willingness to utilize his physical tools. He plays the game with incredible emotion (think Joakim Noah or Kevin Garnett), often putting opposing players and teammates in harm's way with his desire to make his presence felt. He competes on every possession, often to the point of physical exhaustion, something that will need to be honed. Still, it's an extremely desirable trait in a prospect.

Once he catches the ball in the paint, Biyombo usually has one thing on his mind: dunk. He can take off from incredible distances (well outside the restricted area) and still finish plays because of his sheer length and explosiveness. He absolutely crushes the rim any opportunity he gets.

The Hall of Fame is not for supporting players.
Here are Rodman's scoring averages for his three seasons with the Bulls: 5.5, 5.7 and 4.7 points. And if you're going to tell me that scoring isn't everything, I agree with you, but would also note that the Hall of Fame isn't for players averaging four or five points a game. Even though the majority of Rodman's shot attempts came on put-backs close to the basket, his shooting accuracy never reached 50 percent in Chicago, and it was 43.1 in his final season there. He couldn't create his own shot and let's not even talk about him as a perimeter shooter. Oh, what the heck, let's talk about it -- he averaged 23 percent on three-pointers for his career.
Rodman was a great defensive player and bebounder, but both must be viewed through the prism of his having limited offensive responsibility.

[Kenneth] Faried's mother Waudda suffers from lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks the body's natural defense system, causing inflammation, pain, and tissue damage. Lupus is incurable but can be managed with rest, exercise, medication, and, apparently in the case of Waudda, rebounds.
"Seeing my mother fight through lupus, that's one of those things that sticks with you," Faried said. "She's kept fighting all these years and tried to survive. I've learned a lot from her, about not quitting, having passion about everything you do. She's passionate about rebounding for me. So that's why, every time I play, I just tell myself every rebound I get is going to add an extra day to her life."

"My mother loves it," Faried said. "She's always loved to hear more about my rebounding than my scoring. When I call her after a game, I'll tell her about my points or dunks, and she always says, 'how many rebounds did you get?' If I say nine, that's not good enough, even if I scored 20 points. So I'm always trying to get double figures. I can't let her down."

Tyndall saw in Faried a scrawny, 6-foot-7 burst of energy. He thought Faried had potential to start for the Eagles as a sophomore and perhaps become an all-conference player in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Now Tyndall sees Faried as the once-in-a-lifetime player for his program.
"He’s improved his strength, size and conditioning, with that same motor he had as a 17-year-old high school kid," Tyndall said. "It’s allowed him to become the best rebounder in the history of college basketball. And absolutely, positively, no doubt we could not have projected he’d be what he is today."
Whether Faried is truly the best rebounder is debatable. But the N.C.A.A. marks the border of the modern era at 1973. Since then, no one has pulled down more rebounds than his 1,643.

[At Morehead State, Kenneth] Faried has thrived. He has 1,520 career rebounds, only the fourth player in the past 35 seasons to reach 1,500 and now just 50 boards shy of surpassing Tim Duncan's record for that time period.
Three times this season, he has enjoyed a 20-20 night. And in three of Morehead's past six games, he's pulled down 20 rebounds.
NBA scouts have become regulars in the throwback Ellis T. Johnson Arena, all winding and finding their way through the Appalachian hills to Morehead in order to see the player often compared to Dennis Rodman.

"Aldridge is among several players, including Minnesota's Kevin Love and Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, who are awaiting word whether they will be going to the All-Star Game on Feb. 20. Reserves for both teams, based on a vote by the league's coaches, will be announced on Thursday.
Aldridge is averaging 25.7 rebounds and 10.3 point per game since Dec. 15. On Tuesday night against the Spurs he was unstoppable."

Yup, you heard it right....at least, according to ESPN's recap of the Blazers-Spurs game Aldridge is now averaging 25.7 rebounds and 10.3 points per game since December 15th. What a stud.
Now, if only we could get him to get some more points on the board and we'd have ourself a real All-Star!
