Rockies acquire Ramon Ortiz from Minnesota

The Rockies have acquired Minnesota's Ramon Ortiz for Triple-A infielder Matt Macri.

__________________________________

This trade is part of a series of roster moves by the Rockies today, who've also promoted both Ramon Ramirez and Elmer Dessens to take spots on the 25 man roster, according to Denver Post. The Dessens call up is troubling, since it's to take Cook's place in the rotation temporarily, who might be pushed back to Saturday.

What we still don't know is who's leaving the roster. It looks as if nobody is heading down to the Springs for the time being, since the Rockies also moved Juan Morillo and Judd Songster to Triple A to take the places of Dessens and Ramirez. Taveras' trip to the DL opens up one 25 man spot, but where the other two spots, as well as the 40 man spot for Ortiz come from, is unknown to us at this time.

Ortiz is pretty much a journeyman pitcher who faced early ridicule in Minnesota for taking a roster spot away from one of their younger, talented pitchers (hmm, why does this sound familiar?). He's pitched to a 5.14 ERA between starting and relief, and has produced a meager VORP of 5.7 in 91 innings. He's long had troubles with the longball as a starter, but that hasn't been much of an issue this season. Ortiz has long caught the eye of O'Dowd and Co., but like many recent acquisitions, he comes past his prime and unlikely to make a large impact.

So, which is more disheartening to you? That we've lost Matt Macri, we've gained Ramon Ortiz, we're experiencing injury difficulties with Cook, we're being forced to rely on Dessens to start, or that we likely won't be seeing the young, talented Morales (despite prodding from players) any time soon?

Update [2007-8-15 19:24:21 by David OhNo]:The story keeps getting worse. The Rocky Mountain News is now reporting that Cook is heading to the DL. For the next two weeks, our rotation could be Francis, Jimenez, Fogg, Dessens, and Ortiz. Our playoff odds just got a considerably smaller as the nightmare that started last night continues into the late afternoon hours of today. Oh please, Ubaldo, give us fans a sliver of hope tonight.

Mike Coolbaugh (1972-2007) ---- Rest in Peace

Tulsa Drillers' first base coach Mike Coolbaugh dies after being hit by foul ball

From the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:

The first base coach of the Tulsa Drillers died after being struck by a foul ball during a game at Dickey-Stephens Park on Sunday night, officials confirmed.

Mike Coolbaugh was hit in the side of the head during in the top of ninth inning with Drillers player Tino Sanchez at bat. Coolbaugh collapsed to the ground and lay there motionless as medical personnel and team members came to his side. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on the field.

Coolbaugh, 35, then was transported to Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock. He was pronounced dead a short time later, according to Sgt. Terry Kuykendall, spokesman for the North Little Rock Police Department.

According to the Tulsa Drillers Web site, Coolbaugh joined the team on July 3.
The game was suspended with the Arkansas Travelers leading 7-3 with no outs in the ninth inning.

Very sad.  I had the pleasure of meeting Coolbaugh a few years ago.   He was very personable and friendly from what I remember.  Coolbaugh had spent the last 17 years involved in professional baseball as both a player and a coach.  Coolbaugh is survived by his wife, Mandy, and two young sons, Joseph and Jacob. Mandy Coolbaugh is expecting another child in October.

Update [2007-7-23 15:29:29 by Russ]: The Rockies have issued a statement, and a memorial fund has been set up in his memory. For those who want to donate:

Game #22: Fogg vs. Pelfrey

With Josh Fogg on the hill I'm not too optimistic about our chances, but the offense has to break out some time.  Why not today?   Mike Pelfrey certainly isn't a world beater by any means.  Hopefully the Rockies can take advantage of his two-pitch nature and relative inexperience.

Avoid the sweep and leave New York with a modicum of dignity remaining.  Just do it, it's as simple as that.

4/21 Roster Moves

Bobby Keppel and Ryan Speier have been called up from Colorado Springs.

Matt Herges was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for Keppel.
He had thrown four innings over the last three days and the Rockies felt the need to bring up a fresh arm.

"In fairness to Matt maybe it was a little bit of him (being ineffective)," manager Clint Hurdle said. "But he's thrown a lot. He threw the last day he was in Colorado Springs, he threw an inning the first day he was (Thursday) and he threw yesterday. We need to fill some voids right now."
Most importantly, Ramon Ramirez was placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained right elbow.
Ramirez, who's been effective as a seventh-inning reliever, injured his arm Tuesday night against the Giants. Ramirez was credited with a win in the Rockies' 5-3 victory. Ramirez's stint on the disabled list is retroactive to Wednesday, meaning he's eligible to return on May 3.

Asheville Roster Announced

Asheville’s opening day roster was released this afternoon:

Lineup: (8)
C Michael McKenry
1B Michael Paulk
2B Daniel Mayora
SS Hector Gomez
3B Spence Nagy
LF Jay Cox
CF Anthony Jackson
RF Vic Ferrante

Bench: (5)
C Jhaysson Agustin
1B Logan Wiens
2B/SS/3B Geoff Strickland
2B/SS/3B Radames Nazario
OF Bret Berglund

Pitchers: (12)
RHP Josh Sullivan
LHP Keith Weiser
RHP Aneury Rodriguez
RHP Simon Ferrer
RHP Andy Graham
RHP Craig Baker
LHP Tommy Baumgardner
RHP Sean Jarrett
RHP Ethan Katz
RHP Andy Kreidermacher
RHP James Burok
RHP Zach Simons

There are many surprises here. Namely, the absences of Brian Aguailar, Chris Cook(injured?), Matt Repec(injured), Josh Banda and a few others.  It's also surprising to see Agustin, Nagy, Nazario and Wiens on the team.  Injured relievers Will Harris and David Bechtold will begin the season in extended spring training, but should eventually join the team at a later date.

Although I doubt this team will be as successful as Colorado Springs, Tulsa or Modesto, they still should be interesting to watch nonetheless.

Knuckleballer Simon Ferrer added to 40-man roster; Optioned to Tulsa

Brian Lawrence was also placed on the 15-day DL, as the Rockies finalized their opening day roster.

This is a very odd move by the Rockies.

I don't get it.  What's the point of adding Ferrer to the 40-man?

Scouting Report / Bio: Big athlete often compared to Matt Holliday, but doesn't show the same athleticism. Smith has solid plate coverage with a pretty line drive stroke. Power could still come, but doesn't have the same loft to his hits as most power hitters. Could be more patience. Defensively, Smith takes erratic routes and his arm is just average. Best profile may be in left field.

Future Outlook: Average MLB starting left fielder
