According to Ken Rosenthal at Foxsports.com the Rockies are working out a deal that would send Eli Marrero to the Mets for Kaz Matsui, so long as the Mets eat most of Matsui's $8 million dollar salary. In addition, the article also says that we would be interested in Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford to fill our centerfield post.
My initial take is that this would be a quick upgrade at short, not forcing us to push prospects into our starting role too early. Matsui's fading under the pressure of playing in New York, and I really think he'd be better once out of the spotlight. I think Marrero's value to the team is limited now that Yorvit Torrealba's back and Ryan Spilborghs is proving an adequate fourth outfielder.
