Weekend Games to Follow #3

New, 3 comments

[editor's note, by Russ] These previews had originally appeared as diaries but since I created a draft section, I'll be putting them all on the front page. So if you want to view all articles pertaining to the draft from now on, go to the bottom of the post and click on "Draft". You'll have only draft stories on your page. Be aware that it only goes back to the start of the draft profiles with David Price.

As I write this, I'm listening to the South Carolina-Liberty game. South Carolina doesn't have many interesting players for this draft, but for 2008 1B Justin Smoak and 2005 Rockies draft pick SS Reese Havens are both top talents.

In ACC action, #1 Clemson starts the season today against George Mason. The most talented player on the team is lefty Daniel Moskos who closes for the Tigers. I've read some reports that believe a Major League team may want to move him to the rotation and I'll try to find that for you later. OF Brad Chalk is Baseball America's 1st team pre-season All-American and their 31st overall pre-season college prospect. Also keep an eye on 2B Taylor Harbin and senior 1B Andy D'Alessio who has been drafted twice already, both times in the 10th round. In other action around the league, North Carolina SS Josh Horton faces Seton Hall's Sean Black on Sunday. Miami-Fl. Takes on Florida this weekend and we should follow Hurricanes' lefty Scott Maine as usual, but also Florida's senior 1B Matt LaPorta and junior RHP Bryan Augenstein. Georgia Tech hosts Illinois-Chicago this weekend but on Tuesday C Matt Wieters hit a 3-run homer to win the game in extra innings against Kennesaw State and recorded the win.

In SEC action, David Price should pitch against Ohio today. Nick Schmidt and the Arkansas Razorbacks won't be playing today as the game was postponed to Monday. Charlie Furbush and the LSU Tigers take on Stetson over the weekend. Tennessee LHP James Adkins faces Bethune-Cookman.

In other action, Wes Roemer pitches against the Arizona Wildcats. Joe Savery, Brian Friday and Rice face Long Beach State. SS Ryan Wehrle and LHP Tony Watson of Nebraska face New Mexico today as part of the Texas-Arlington Invitational. Watson went six innings, struck out four and walked four. OF Michael Taylor and Stanford visit OF Kyle Russell and Texas. Matt Mangini and Corey Brown of Oklahoma State face LaSalle. UTIL Damon Sublett and the Wichita State Shockers take on Pepperdine. Aaron Fitt's Weekend Preview highlights this matchup. TCU RHP Jake Arietta faces OhNoKoolAid's favorite team, Oral Roberts. UC Riverside RHP James Simmons faces San Francisco LHP Aaron Poreda. And Oregon State SS Darwin Barney bats against the `Zags.

The Todd Frazier profile will definitely be up tonight, along with guys from smaller colleges that are worth following.
