Don't look now, but with a strong start today, Jason Hammel will become the Rockies' third starting pitcher with an ERA below 4.00. 2008 was the only season we finished with more than one. Also, if we win tonight, that will be 15 of 16. I believe that will be the best 16 game streak in franchise history in one season. We won 15 of 16 regular season games covering the last 15 of 2007 and Opening Day in 2008.
Morton came in the Nate McLouth trade. This will be his second start of the season, his first since June 10 at Atlanta, where he lasted just one inning before leaving with a hamstring injury. He was abysmal with Atlanta last year, going 4-8 with a 6.15 ERA but had pitched very well in AAA this season before his callup and injury. Morton is your typical four pitch pitcher, throwing a fastball (90-93), slider (80-84), curveball (~75) and changeup (80-83). He has suffered from control issues his entire career in the minors and majors except this season in AAA. Maybe we can coax out old demons.
Hammel is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in June, and the Rockies have won his last five starts.
