Rockies Sign Mike Jacobs

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies have signed first baseman Mike Jacobs to a minor league contract. Jacobs, who saw brief playing time in April with the New York Mets before spending time in the AAA affiliates of the Mets and Toronto Blue Jays, will likely start the season at AAA Colorado Springs, and play a similar role to Brad Eldred in the organization last year. He has an invite to Spring Training.

Jacobs, who bats left-handed, is a strong power threat, who has not shown an ability to hit for average over the past few years of his career. His best offensive year was in 2008 with the Florida Marlins, hitting 32 home runs and driving in 93 runs, though poor play at first base has kept him to some degree a DH when he spent time with the Royals in the AL in 2009.

This is largely a depth move, giving us a potential MLB level player at AAA and another 1B into the system for the next year.
