In a preview of the 2010 Fall Classic, the efficacious Royals downed the Rockies 5-0 this afternoon. The teams were scoreless for the first six innings, which for three innings had an improved Jeff Francis on the mound. As Troy Renck reports:
Francis showed much better fastball command than he displayed in his Cactus League debut last Friday. [...] Two Royals reached in the first on singles, but Francis escaped damage. He walked pitcher Zack Greinke on six pitches to lead off the third, but Greinke was erased straying off second base on a rundown after a groundball to shortstop.
Yeah, that walk to Greinke was embarrassing since Greinke was told not to swing the bat.
Tim Redding came on for the next three innings and presumably helped his case to be on the 25-man roster, allowing one hit and striking out three. Manny Corpas took the loss because he allowed the first run, but it was Edgmer Escalona who allowed four runs on four hits in the eighth inning.
All in all, this game was a snoozefest. Texas tomorrow.
In other news, Ubaldo Jimenez was officially named the Opening Day starter.
