Rockies 7, Angels 5; Rockies hitters rescue Ubaldo Jimenez in win over Angels

Ian Stewart had three hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Cole Garner hit a home run and triple as the Rockies bats came out in force against the Angels in a split squad victory on Friday afternoon. Troy Tulowitzki walked twice and singled, scoring two runs in his 2010 Cactus League debut, while Miguel Olivo hit his second double of the Spring and drove in two. Clint Barmes also hit a home run for the Rockies off of Angels starter Sean O'Sullivan.

Greg Smith started for the Rockies and was somewhat wild, walking three and striking out two in two innings of work. Smith strikes me as a Doug Davis type of LHP, so the walks early in the Spring probably aren't that bothersome as he zeros in on the corners. Ubaldo Jimenez, who entered the game late after getting stuck in traffic on his way to the stadium, allowed the most damage from the Angels, giving up four runs in his second inning of work, the bottom of the fifth, wherein he allowed three singles and two walks.

The good news with both Smith and Jimenez would be that they're keeping the ball down, all their outs in play came on the ground, and overall the Rockies recorded 14 groundouts to four fly-outs during the game. Combined with the loss to the Giants, the Rockies are now 2-1 in Cactus League play.

Box score.
