Jason Hammel just didn't have it tonight. Oh, he snapped off a few nice curveballs, but it was all those other pitches that got him in trouble. He went three innings and allowed five runs, giving him a WPA of -0.297. Three of the runs scored on a first inning homer by Adam LaRoche. In his four starts, Hammel has taken two losses and the Rockies have lost all four games.
On the bright side, the bullpen was great. Manny Corpas, long reliever, twirled three innings of solid relief, striking out four. Joe Beimel dealt in his two innings, and Randy Flores struck out two in his inning of work.
Offensively, Carlos Gonzalez smoked a ball in the bottom of the first for his second homer (solo shot) of the season to put the Rockies on the board. The rest of the offense ran into Dan Haren, who struck out ten. Haren shut the Rockies down until the eighth inning when Eric Young Jr. had a pinch-hit double. Carlos Gonzalez then singled him in. The offense attempted to show up again in the bottom of the ninth with Chad Qualls on the mound. After a leadoff walk by Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki and Seth Smith struck out swinging back-to-back. So, with two outs things got a bit interesting. Helton moved over to second on a Miguel Olivo single and then scored on an Ian Stewart single to center. Jason Giambi pinch-hit for Clint Barmes, only to strike out swinging,
