2011 Colorado Rockies Game #46: Josh Collmenter vs. Jorge de la Rosa

That's....awkward
That's....awkward

The first thing you will notice about tonight's starter for Arizona is his awkward throwing motion, which can resemble a white man trying to dance with concrete in his shoes more than pitching. In actuality, Josh Collmenter's motion is derived more from axe-throwing, which is as badass as it is unique.

The second thing you will notice is that his repertoire is completely unique for an MLB pitcher. He throws a relatively straight ~88mph fastball almost 75% of the time, which would rank 4th among MLB starters. Besides that, his secondary offerings are almost exclusively change-ups, with the rare curveball mixed in.

It isn't nasty by any means, and he isn't even a "crafty righty." Truthfully, he's more like a poor man's Rafael Betancourt with less velocity and lesser breaking stuff. He pounds the strike zone (just one walk in 26 IP), so the Rockies' patented patient approach would likely slay them. They'll need to be aggressive, because for the most part, they will know what is coming, and it will be in the strike zone.

On the good side of the ball, Jim Tracy sends out Jorge de la Rosa, who owns a 2.24 ERA in 15 appearances against the team that originally signed him. Of opponents in which he has started against at least four times, that ranks numero uno.
