Esmil Rogers to the DL; Mortensen Activated

As tweeted by Troy Renck today, Esmil Rogers is hitting the DL with Lat Soreness, and Clay Mortensen has been promoted to take his start this weekend.

@TroyRenck Esmil Rogers' soreness that I wrote about hours ago is in his lat muscle. Will go on dl and likely make 2 rehab starts. Mortensen goes Sat

Mortensen hasn't fared well in AAA Colorado Springs so far this year, posting only 8.2IP over 3 starts with a 13.50 ERA and a 1.67 K/BB ratio.

His MLB performance this far has spanned nearly the same amount of time, going 8 innings in long relief without allowing a run, striking out 3 and walking 2. Almost more importantly, however, is Mortensen's 68.2 GB% in that small sample, and with strong infield defense, there's a good chance that Mortensen's MLB success might continue a little longer. We should all hope so, given that he's getting the start tomorrow vs the Giants, a team he shut out for 6 innings in relief after an Esmil Rogers implosion.

Rogers' injury could be some of the explanation for his poor performances this season outside of his first start in Pittsburgh. Since his 7.1IP, 1R outing against the Pirates, Rogers has pitched a combined 14 innings in 3 starts and one relief appearance, allowing a total of 18 runs, striking out 8 while walking 12.

At this point, the Rockies and their fanbase are all hoping that Mortensen can eat some innings while waiting for Aaron Cook to finish his rehab.
