2011 Rockies Game 106 Wrap: Hammel Pitches Gud, Rockies Win Without Scoring 4 Runs

Whoah, is it seriously 2:30? Well, I guess that's what you get when you go out all night with a crew of rapscallions instead of dutifully sitting by your laptop waiting for the baseball game to conclude.

Tonight was a victory. Pitching did real gud, namely Jason Hammel. Hammel went 6.1 innings, striking out 4, walking 2, and limiting the Padres to a mere 2 runs on 5 hits. Yes, folks, a Rockies pitcher just accomplished the following:

Struck out more batters than walked.

Allowed fewer runs than the opposition.

Did not generally disappoint Rockies fans (unless you just don't like the cut of Hammel's jib, in which case I can't really help you).

Nah, this was a good game for the pitching staff. After Hammel did his work on the mound, Huston Street, Rafael Betancourt, and the MattPen combined to shut the Padres' offense down for the remaining high-leverage innings.

Despite the fact that the Rockies won, I'm still going to boo the bats.

Ian Stewart drove in a run in the Rockies' 2nd that included 4 singles, a double steal, an RBI balk, and a failed squeeze bunt. He also punched out twice.

Tulo had a 2-hit day. He is absolved from the boos.

Other players had hits and RBI (read: Chris Iannetta), but the problem I had with the game was the manner in which the runs were scored. Oh, the 3 runs that scored were great, because come on, singles, balks, all kinds of stuff to throw off a pitcher. But after that 3rd inning, man, there was just NOTHING. The Rockies do have this tendency to score a small clump of runs in the early going and then forget that they're supposed to add to that run total as the game progresses. I mean, yeah, sure, they're trying and all of those good things. But a sack full of pure effort is worth a sack.

This could just be selective memory, but this trend seems to continue disturbingly too often. "Rockies score early, coast rest of game". Doesn't really matter if they win or not, because after the initial onslaught, they either get completely figured out or they just get into their own heads. Or maybe they all share a really lazy hive mind.

Again, good on the Rockies for winning the opener. That makes me feel good on the inside.
