Four game series on the road are tough. They are even tougher in Atlanta, where the Braves owned the National League's best home record in 2010. Tonight marks the Rockies' most favorable pitching matchup, so any narrative involving at least a split would include a W this evening.
Jhoulys Chacin takes the mound tonight for the first time since last Monday at Wrigley Field, when he was roughed up by the Cubs to the tune of six runs on nine hits (3 HR) in five innings. The Rockies announced that Chacin had forearm tightness that bothered him in the game and cautiously pushed his next start to tonight. Prior to that start, he had allowed 3 ER total in 26.2 IP, covering his previous four June starts. With two scheduled starts remaining before the All-Star Break, he still maintains a chance at reaching ten wins before the All-Star Break.
Derek Lowe has won just one start this season in Atlanta, posting an ERA above 5.00 in his home park. In June, he was touched up in four of his six starts, garnering solid results against the freefalling Marlins and pathetic Mariners offense. He currently has his highest walk rate since 2004 with the Red Sox, though his strikeout rate is the highest of his career as a starting pitcher.
