Rockies' Kent Matthes stars in Arizona Fall League opener

Colorado Rockies outfield prospect Kent Matthes led the Salt River Rafters to a 6-5 win over the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League opener on Tuesday night at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

Matthes went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs batted in. He also scored two runs. Fellow Rockies outfield prospect Corey Dickerson doubled, as well, for his only hit of the night.

Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood made the start for the Rafters, and was mostly impressive. He allowed two runs in four innings of work, but did not walk anybody and struck out six batters. Chicago Cubs top prospect Javier Baez did the most damage, taking a Chatwood fastball 430-plus feet out to centerfield. Still, reports on Chatwood's velocity were very good, as he worked in the 93-96 range.

Cory Riordan "earned" the victory by allowing a run on two hits in the eighth inning. He struck out one, and also made an error on a pickoff attempt. Lars Davis played the entirety of the game behind the plate, going 0-for-3 while allowing a passed ball.
