Colorado's minor league affiliates went 1-3 on the night, which was mostly devoid of good performances by top prospects.
The most incredible thing about this game was that the Sky Sox (4-4) scored 9 runs on only 4 hits. Drawing 8 walks will help. After falling behind 2-0 early, Colorado Springs got RBI doubles from DJ LeMahieu and Andrew Brown to go up 3-2 -- and it stayed that way until the 8th, when Zach Putnam gave up a run scoring single to tie it up.
In the top of the 9th, Colorado scored 6 runs on 2 hits, 3 walks, a HBP, and an error in judgment on a fielder's choice. Matt McBride had the big hit, clearing the bases with a 3 run triple.
PuRP 13 Edwar Cabrera was pretty effective outside of two solo homers surrendered in the 4th inning -- but that was enough to get him the loss in this one. In all, Cabrera went 6 innings for the Drillers (4-3), allowing 5 hits, 2 walks, and the aforementioned 2 runs. On offense, PuRP 9 Josh Rutledge went 2-3 with a double and scored the only run.
The Nuts continued their abysmal start to 2012 (1-6, 1-5 at home) with a tough loss at Stockton. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a Bryce Massanari double, PuRP 27 Josh Slaats gave it all back and then some, allowing 5 runs from the 2nd - 4th. Slaats' official line was 3 IP, 5 runs on 10 hits and 5 strikeouts.
To their credit, Modesto fought back to 5-5 with 2 in the 7th and 1 in the 9th, thanks in large part to the efforts of Josh Hungerman and company in the bullpen. However, the way that Stockton scored the winning run was downright weak. The lead-off hitter reached on an error by Brett Tanos (one of 4 on the night by the Nuts), moved to 2nd on a botched pick-off attempt, moved to 3rd on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch (which happened to be the 3rd strike on the batter).
Delta Cleary Jr went 2-3 with a double and PuRP 13 Trevor Story added 2 more hits for the Tourists (4-4) in a losing effort. Chris Jensen was competent on the mound, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 IP but got the no decision, while the bullpen allowed 3 runs in the 8th to break a 2-2 tie.
