Rockies 5, Padres 3: Jamie Moyer Officially in the Record Books for Being Old

Congrats old man.
Congrats old man.

Jamie Moyer was born 49 years and 150 days ago. Jamie Moyer won a major league baseball game today. That means Jamie Moyer will go into the history books, replacing Jack Quinn as the oldest pitcher to win an MLB game. Quinn was 76 days younger when he set the record 80 years ago.

It was no win theft in relief, bailout by a strong offense, or pristine team effort either. Jamie Moyer, who was born before middle names were invented, earned every arm of the W that will be next to his name in the box score. The crafty lefty threw seven innings and allowed zero earned runs. He walked two and struck out just one, but he induced 12 ground balls and the Padres got weak contact the rest of the game.

It was a good thing Moyer was on, because his position player mates did not give him much breathing room while he was on the mound. The lineup accounted for just 7 hits for the night, but Dexter Fowler did managed to deposit one Bass changeup over the right field scoreboard for a two-run homer. Wilin Rosario doubled in a run.

Defensively, Colorado did manage to turn four double plays. A potential fifth was costly though. Troy Tulowitzki continues to doubt himself, as he committed two additional errors, six for the season. One came on a tailor-made double play ball in the seventh inning that would have ended the frame. Instead, a run scored on the play, and a second scored on a sacrifice fly. Both errors were unearned.

The offense put two runs up in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Rafael Betancourt some room, which proved to be important. After a Tulo walk and an error on Mark Kotsay, Michael Cuddyer roped his seventh double of the season and WIlin Rosario hit an opposite field sac fly.
