2012 Rockies Game # 73: Gio Gonzalez vs. Christian Friedrich

Christian Friedrich has a 12.60 ERA at Coors Field, compared to 2.64 on the road. Part of that problem is that he has thrown just 51% of his first pitches for strikes, well below the MLB average of 60%. If he is to succeed tonight, he should follow the blueprint set out last night by Jeff Francis, a southpaw with far inferior stuff.

Last night, the Rockies used a fantastic showing by Jeff Francis and the continued dominance of the most reliable portion of the bullpen to defeat one of the best pitchers in the game in Stephen Strasburg. They may have to be even better tonight, because Gio Gonzalez may be even better than Strasburg.

To date, Gonzalez has a better strikeout rate, ERA, FIP, home run rate, ground ball rate, BABIP, strand rate, and line drive rate than Strasburg. That's all.
