Thursday Pebble Report: David Dahl Reaches Base Four More Times

AAA Colorado Springs - L 4-6, (39-39, L1, t-2nd, 7.0 GB)

#30 PuRP Rob Scahill (2009, 8th round) had allowed just one hit in his first four innings, but his promising start came unraveled in the fifth, when the Tucson Padres scored five runs on five singles, a walk and a home run. That five-run fifth wiped out a 4-0 lead, and the Sky Sox offense couldn't get re-started. #18 PuRP DJ LeMahieu (2012, trade) and Wilkin Castillo (2012, MiLB FA) each had two hits for Colorado Springs. Tim Wheeler (2009, 1st round) singled and walked, but was also picked off first base by the catcher. The loss snapped a five game winning streak.

High-A Modesto - W 12-9, (6-1, W1, 1st)

The Nuts burst out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning using six singles and a three-run double by #20 PuRP Cristhian Adames (2007, DR), one of his three hits on the night. They would need every one of those runs, as Juan Gonzalez (2006, VZ) continued to be shaky by allowing 6 runs (4 earned) in 6 innings, and the bullpen permitted three more tallies. Fortunately, #10 PuRP Kyle Parker (2011, 1st round) hit his 7th home run, and Brett Tanos (2010, 10th round) singled, homered and walked twice to help keep Modesto in the lead throughout.

Low-A Asheville - L 5-12, (2-5, L1, t-4th, 3.0 GB)

Vianney Mayo (2006, VZ) returned from the disabled list, but his return was short-lived. The right-hander allowed three runs in one inning of work before leaving. Joey Wong (2009, 24th round) singled in a run and scored on a balk as the Tourists battled back to a tie, but Geoff Parker (2010, 9th round), Rafael Suarez (2006, VZ) and Michael Wolford (2011, 26th round) were each touched up in Augusta in relief. Jared Simon (2010, 8th round) hit a 2-run home run, while #16 PuRP Rosell Herrera (2009, DR) and #13 PurP Will Swanner (2010, 15th round) each went 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts.

Short Season A Tri-City - L 5-6, (4-9, L1, t-3rd, 4.0 GB)

Ben Hughes (2011, 10 th round) had a very good start last night in Pasco, Washington, working five mostly dominant innings. He didn't allow a base runner in three of them, and in another, only allowed an infield hit. It was the fourth inning that burned him, as the Yakima Bears strung together five groundball singles through the infield to score three runs. #15 PuRP Charlie Blackmon (2008, 2nd round) ended the inning by throwing out a runner advancing to third from center field. Out of the 11 ground balls Hughes induced, only 4 resulted in outs. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Matt Argyropoulos (2011, 27th round) and Blackmon both doubled and singled, and Dillon Thomas struck out three times in four hitless at-bats. One of his strikeouts came with Blackmon on third base in the eighth inning as the tying run. Thomas has 14 strikeouts and 7 hits in 40 at-bats this season.

Rookie Grand Junction - L 6-7, (5-5, L1, 3rd, 2.0 GB)

Matthew Carasiti (2012, 6th round) struggled in his second pro start, allowing five runs on eight hits in four innings without striking out a batter. Over his first 40 batters faced in his career, he has struck out just one. David Dahl (2012, 1st round) continues to heat up by going 3-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI. He has reached base in 9 of 13 plate appearances in the series against the Owlz, with 7 RBI and three extra base hits. Orem also had a 2012 draftee that went 3-for-3, one Caleb Bushyhead, who gets mentioned only due to his name. Chris Cowell (2012, 34th round) doubled twice, while Max White (2012, 2nd round), Carl Thomore (2011, 2nd round) and Corelle Prime (2012, 12th round) combined to be 0-for-12 with 7 strikeouts.

DSL Rockies - L 2-3, (12-10, L1, 3rd, 2.0 GB)

Joel Payamps (2010, DR) was the big signee in the 2010 class, but he is having a strange 2012 season. Payamps allowed a career-high seven hits yesterday in six innings while striking out just three. He also walked two and hit three batters. All three runs came with Payamps on the mound, though one was unearned. For the season, his strikeout rate has plummeted form 8.92 last year to 4.20, but he has also decreased his walk rate by over 2x. Denzel Richardson (2011, St. Maarten) doubled home a run and singled and Jose de la Cruz (2011, DR) singled, scored and walked twice.

AA Tulsa is off for the All-Star Break.
