Sunday Pebble Report - Joel Payamps Dominant in DSL Opener

AAA Colorado Springs - W 8-7, (27-29, W1, 3rd, 4.0 GB)

Thomas Field led off the eighth and ninth innings with doubles, then scored the go-ahead run in both innings. That means a walk-off win for the Sky Sox, and it was in unconventional fashion. After a sac bunt, the Tucson Padres decided to intentionally walk the bases full, a plan that failed miserably when Brendan Harris (2012, MiLB FA)

Tyler Chatwood (2012, trade) rebounded from his disastrous previous start on May 28 with a strong effort Saturday night. He worked around eight hits for a quality start, allowing three runs in six innings. #8 PuRP Tim Wheeler (2009, 1st round) made his first appearance since breaking his hamate bone April 12 and doubled, scored twice and converted two sac bunts. Andrew Brown (2012, waivers) forged a dagger into former Rockie Kip Wells with a 3-run home run.

#1 PuRP Drew Pomeranz (2011, trade) will take the mound in Colorado Springs this afternoon at 1:05 MDT.

AA Tulsa - W 6-2, (30-24, W1, 1st)

#9 PuRP Josh Rutledge (2010, 3rd round) doubled twice, singled twice and scored twice, and diminutive DH Angelys Nina (2006, DR) drove in three runs with two singles as the Drillers offense broke out a bit against Midland. Juan Crousset (2006, DR) doubled, singled and drove in two, his first and second career AA hits. #18 PuRP Joe Gardner (2011, trade) turned in his best start as a member of the Rockies organization, allowing just one run on three hits in seven innings. He struck out four, walked one and induced 11 ground outs.

HM PuRP Dan Houston (2008, 7th round) will take the mound in Midland at 5:00 MDT.

High-A Modesto - L 2-3, (27-29, L1, t-3rd, 5.5 GB)

Modesto outhit the first-place Blaze, but they come up just short Saturday in Bakersfield. #7 PuRP Kyle Parker (2010, 1st round) flew out with runners at the corners to end the game, but he did provide the offense an inning earlier when he drove in a run with a single and scored on a hit by Jared Clark (2009, 12th round). #19 PuRP Corey Dickerson (2010, 8th round) and #25 PuRP Cristhian Adames (2007, DR) both collected two hits, and Juan Gonzalez (2006, VZ) was worked six strong innings, allowing three runs (two earned). In the game, Blaze shortstop Billy Hamilton stole his 61st base of the season. The art isn't dead.

Leuris Gomez (2008, VZ) will face Andrew Brackman today at 2:30 MDT.

Low-A Asheville - W 12-10, (39-17, W4, 1st)

The Tourists' lineup was missing their two hottest hitters in #12 PuRP Trevor Story (2011, sandwich pick) and #21 PuRP Will Swanner (2010, 15th round), but their offense did not suffer. Tyler Massey (2008, 14th round) and Jared Simon (2010, 6th round) each homered, and Asheville got multi-hit games from HM PuRP Sam Mende (2011, 31st round), Taylor Featherston (2011, 5th round), Brian Humphries (2011, 14th round), Jose Rivera (2009, 23rd round) and Massey.

#14 PuRP Tyler Anderson (2011, 1st round) was not sharp, but his issues were compounded in a 7-run 4th inning by an error by Featherston. Overall, his line was a tough 3.2 IP, with 8 runs allowed (3 earned) on 6 hits. Chris Jensen (2011, 6th round) will get the ball in the series finale today at 12:05 MDT.

DSL Rockies - W 8-1, (1-0)

Joel Payamps got the Opening Day assignment after posting a 3.29 ERA as a 17-year-old in the DSL in 2011. The right-hander did not disappoint, throwing six shutout innings and allowing just three hits. Catcher Jairo Garcia (2011, DO) drove in two with two hits in four at-bats. 20yo Jonathan Roble (2010, DR) singled and doubled and third baseman Luis Jean threw out a couple hits as well.

As the inaugural Grand Junction rosters have yet to be announced, this game sheds light on a few players who won't seem to be making the jump from the DSL. 20yo Franmy Pena appears to at least be starting his third consecutive season for the DSL Rockies, despite leading the squad last year with a .777 OPS. Miguel Dilone (2011, DR) had a strong debut in the DSL last year, but at 18 years old, his placement in the DSL again is not a surprise, given how they have handled Jayson Aquino, Rosell Herrera and Joel Payamps.

That leaves possible Grand Junction Rockies as 19yo C Jose Briceno, 19yo OF Jesus Basilio, 20yo IF Cesar Galvez, and 18yo Raimel Tapia, 19yo LH SP Jayson Aquino and 19yo RHP Johendi Jiminian.
