Rockies Shut Out By Bronson Arroyo, Reds -- Lose 3-0

I said in the game thread that Colorado would like to see a bunch of runs in this game. That was because I supposed that Cincinnati was going to score quite a few at Coors. In that regard I was wrong, as Drew Pomeranz allowed only 3 runs on 7 hits in 5 1/3 IP, striking out 5 and walking 1 but got the loss (1-6). All things considered, it was a pretty decent outing by Rockies pitchers, especially when you consider that the bullpen again didn't (officially) allow any runs.

Then again, it's pretty hard to win when you don't score any runs. Bronson Arroyo and company shut out the Rockies despite allowing 8 hits in the game, 3 for extra bases. Marco Scutaro had one of those extra hits, his final such hit as a member of the Rockies. Scutaro will instead ply his trade for the Giants from here on out. Carlos Gonzalez and Jordan Pacheco both had 2 hits (a double apiece as well), but none of the hits came at the right time.

Colorado's best chance by far was in the bottom of the 5th, when Pacheco's double had runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, but a Josh Rutledge strikeout and a Drew Pomeranz groundout ended that threat. Given Pomeranz's pitch count at that point, I was surprised to see him hitting in that situation. Jim Tracy's gamble didn't work out this time, as Pomeranz only got one more out and "allowed" another run thanks to two straight wild pitches by Adam Ottavino.

It was one of those games that was easy to skim through, as I did while watching the Opening Ceremonies and monitoring MLB Trade Rumors semi-religiously. For the record, I'm decidedly underwhelmed by the Scutaro return, but something is much better than nothing in this case.
