It seems like it was just yesterday when we last played the Giants.
Oh. Well, maybe not yesterday, but this time last week we were reading something about the Giants. Maybe because we played them last weekend. Well, "played" is kind of a loose term. Over that 3 game set, the Giants outscored the Rockies 25-13. Leading up to that series, the Giants had scored double-digit runs in all of 2 games in the 2012 campaign: a 14-7 barnburner against Miami and a 10-0 slaughtering of the hapless Astros (Actually, J.A. Happ started that game, so maybe we should find another adjective).
After the sweep of Colorado, SF went on to drop their opener against the Cardinals, 2-8, won game 2 on the wings of one of those befuddling Barry Zito starts, committed hate crimes against Joe Kelly, Brian Fuentes, and Mitchell Boggs (15-0), and finally dropped a pitching duel against Adam Wainwright.
Little did I know when beginning this article that the Giants, after their 15-0 rout of the Cardinals, were leading the league in runs scored on the road. The Giants. Leading the league in runs scored in ANY split. that's unbelievable. I fully credit Brett Pill. Ok, no I don't, but I'm just hoping that some Giants fans snuck over to read this preview, read that line, and proceeded to throw a tantrum.
The even better news for the 1st place Giants is that help is on the way for them.
Behind Melky Cabrera and Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval has been the next biggest contributor offensively to the Giants. He has only played in 62 games this season, compiling his above-stated batting line, but has historically been one of the better bats in the Giants lineup. Luckily, the Rockies will likely miss Sandoval this series, as he'll be starting a rehab assignment with the CAL San Jose Giants (same division as our own Modesto Nuts, if you weren't aware) by playing 5 innings at 3B.
Sandoval has posted a career line of .269/.330/.538 against the Rockies with 11 HR. The only other team he's taken yard more is the Padres, with 12 bombs.
Downside for the Rockies' attempts to repeat the "knock the 1st place team out of 1st in the NL West" game, especially with Sandoval still out, is that Marco Scutaro has been killing it in Orange, batting .346/.379/.481 since the trade. Thanks, Scoots.
Upside is that the Giants are the 2nd-to-worst team in the majors hitting at the home (81 wRC+), just ahead of the Mariners (65 wRC+).
