Tyler Chatwood and Co. Shut Down San Fran; Rockies Win 3-0

Well, this game tonight was about the polar opposite of the previous series opener just last week against the San Francisco Giants. In that game, the Rockies had terrible pitching and shaky defense. In tonight's contest, the pitching was great, the defense was solid, and the hitting was timely in a great all-around effort by Colorado. It was only the 3rd shutout of the year for the Rockies, who improved to 24-8 when allowing 3 runs or less in a game.

Tyler Chatwood had a very encouraging start with 5 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2. The best escape of the game came in the bottom of the fifth, when Chatwood got a strike out, throw out double play with runners on the corners to end the best San Francisco threat. Chatwood only threw 71 pitches in the game, but his five innings were enough to get the win (2-2). Adam Ottavino had two scoreless innings of relief, while Matt Belisle and Rafael Betancourt closed it down.

On offense, Colorado got two-out run-scoring singles by Dexter Fowler in the 3rd and Tyler Colvin in the 4th to acquire a slim 2-0 lead, while Chris Nelson's sac fly in the 7th provided the final margin of victory. Both Colvin and Wilin Rosario had two hits for the Rockies.

This game marks three excellent pitching performances in Colorado's last 4 games. In a 41-69 season, that's some pretty welcome news. Let's keep it up in the last two games and pay back the Giants for the beating they delivered to the Rockies in Coors last week. Or at least let's not get anybody else hurt this weekend.
