Giants 9, Rockies 8: Madison Bumgarner Burns Rockies Again, This Time With Bat

Madison Bumgarner is only 23, but he has spent years tormenting the Colorado Rockies. That dominance continued Tuesday night, but not from the mound.

The Rockies pummeled the southpaw often, barreling the ball continuously on their way to 11 hits in 25 plate appearances to just two strikeouts. Chris Nelson recorded three singles, including one of two fortunate hits off the third base bag. Jordan Pacheco and Wilin Rosario both had two hits off Bumgarner as well and even Jhoulys Chacin doubled and scored as the Rockies built a 4-0 lead.

With post-DL Jhoulys Chacin appearing to remain in form, the Rockies were well on their way to taking a series against the first place Giants. Then the fourth inning happened.

Consecutive singles and a fielder's choice put the Giants on the board. Dexter Fowler misjudged a lazy flyball into a single, and with two outs, Chacin left a 93mph fastball in the middle of the plate. While Bumgarner failed to hurt the Rockies from the mound, he did with the bat. One inning after lining a single to center, Bumgarner crushed a fastball into the left-field seats for a huge 3-run, game-tying home run.

Piggybacker Carlos Torres' Cinderella summer spell seems to be running out, as the right hander followed a two run outing last Friday with consecutive two-run innings in this one. That opened the door for the September mopup men. Edgmer Escalona allowed a long home run to Brandon Belt, but Rob Scahill was effective in his MLB debut in the ninth. Buster Posey doubled to deep right, but Scahill induced two flyouts and a popout in a scoreless frame.

That set the stage for the ninth inning, when Tyler Colvin followed a two-out Matt McBride single with a laser home run to right field, his 18th home run of the season. Jason Giambi then hit a harmless flare to third base to end the game.

The rubber game is tomorrow afternoon between Tim Lincecum and Jeff Francis.
