Kris Medlen was good today. Very good. Over 9 innings and 112 pitches, Medlen punched out 12 Rockies, allowed a scant 5 hits, 1 unearned run, and did not issue a free pass to any member of the opposition.
On the other side of the game, Tyler Chatwood was about as ineffective as we could expect a pitcher on a limited workload to be. Over his 3 innings of work, Chatwood threw 76 pitches, 40 for strikes, walked 5 batters to only 2 strikeouts, gave up 3 hits, and left the game after 3 having allowed 6 runs.
The Rockies' only run came in the 7th inning when Carlos Gonzalez scored on a fielding error by Atlanta SS Paul Janish.
For all the praise we've given Tyler Chatwood lately, he is still very prone to these horribly inefficient, more-walks-than-strikeouts starts, much like Alex White. Chatwood's bad outings have been less frequent, but again, like White, pitch selection and getting through batters (for better or for worse) on fewer pitches is going to be a major growing point going forward.
This is a tough way to start a 4-game road series against one of the better teams in the NL, and a Tommy Hanson vs Drew Pomeranz game may not leave a lot of Rockies fans terribly optimistic regarding the outcome of the series.
