Arizona Fall League update: Tyler Matzek earns win, Kyle Parker doubles

New, 5 comments

Matzek and Parker, both of whom will play in the AFL Fall Stars Game this weekend, played a big part in Salt River's victory on Monday.

Kyle Parker doubled and scored, Cristhian Adames knocked in a run and Tyler Matzek earned a win with 1⅔ scoreless innings of relief in the Salt River Rafters' 3-2 victory over the Mesa Solar Sox in Arizona Fall League action on Monday.

Parker, who started at first base, led off the top of the seventh with a two-bagger off of Tigers farmhand Kenny Faulk. He came around to two batters later on a single by Blue Jays minor leaguer Andy Burns. Adames was responsible for driving in the Rafters' other run in the inning, lifting a sacrifice fly to center to plate Burns.

Matzek was awarded the victory even though he entered and exited with the game in a scoreless tie. Matzek inherited and stranded one runner while getting five efficient outs. The 23-year-old left-hander threw 13 of 17 pitches for strikes, didn't walk anybody and struck out one batter.

Tim Wheeler started in left field and finished hitless in four plate appearances.

In other news, Parker and Matzek will represent the Rockies and Salt River in the AFL Fall Stars Game (formerly known as the Rising Stars Game), which will take place on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT.
