Arizona Fall League update: Tim Wheeler goes 5-for-5 in Salt River's 10-0 win

Tim Wheeler was perfect at the plate on Thursday, raising his AFL batting line from woeful to quite respectable.

Rockies minor league outfielder Tim Wheeler went 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI in the Salt River Rafters' 10-0 victory over the Surprise Saguaros in Arizona Fall League play on Thursday.

Remember on Thursday when I mentioned Wheeler's underwhelming AFL line to date? Well, in another lesson in Never Trust a Small Sample Size, it's no longer that way. Wheeler's perfect day at the plate to .309/.397/.418. Not much pop there, but Wheeler is doing everything else right if he can keep up his current pace. Either way, I promise not to put too much stock into it. So there.

Rockies first base prospect Kyle Parker also started and singled twice in five at-bats. Pitching farmhands Tyler Matzek and Cole White had successful appearances out of the bullpen, combining for a pair of scoreless frames during which only one walk (by White) and one hit (off of Matzek) were allowed.

Matzek notched a strikeout, induced a pair of ground outs and threw 14 of 17 pitches for strikes in his inning of work to lower his AFL ERA to 5.97.

The Rafters are back in action against the Glendale Desert Dogs on Friday at 7:35 p.m. MT before breaking for the AFL Fall Stars Game on Saturday. If the current pattern stays true, Cristhian Adames and Dustin Garneau should be in the lineup on Friday.
