Arizona Fall League season recap: Rockies prospects perform well in offseason test

Kyle Parker, Tyler Matzek and a host of other Rockies farmhands during AFL play proved they belong on the diamond with some of baseball's top prospects.

The 2013 Arizona Fall League regular season ended on Thursday with the Salt River Rafters' 3-2 victory over the Scottsdale Scorpions. The win gave the Rafters a 19-12 record for the season, but they were beaten out by the 19-11 Mesa Solar Sox for the AFL East division title following Mesa's 9-3 win earlier in the day.

A pair of Rockies farmhands, Kyle Parker and Dustin Garneau, performed well in the finale. Parker hit his ninth double of the AFL campaign while Garneau launched a solo home run in the fifth inning to provide the deciding run. Garneau and Parker both finished with four home runs, tying for the team lead.

Parker led the team with a .536 slugging percentage to go along with his .278 batting average and .320 on-base percentage. Cristhian Adames, who hit .293/.333/.466, ranked second on the team among Rockies farmhands in OPS, nearly cracking the .800 barrier. Garneau and Tim Wheeler posted nearly identical OPS' despite Wheeler notching a .362 on-base percentage. Garneau's OPS was a slug-heavy .731, closely trailing Wheeler's .740 figure.

On the pitching side, Cole White led all Rockies participants with a 2.16 ERA, but it was Tyler Matzek who showed the most promise. After a disastrous first half to the AFL campaign, Matzek rebounded with a string of five scoreless appearances to close out the season. He struck out eight batters and walked only one during that stretch, which totaled 6⅔ innings. Matzek finished the AFL season with a 3.86 ERA in 11⅔ innings spanning 10 appearances, striking out 13 batters and walking seven.
