Sunday Game Wrap #9: A's 7, Rockies 2

New, 2 comments

A mixture of shoddy pitching, questionable defense, and another base running mistake combined with an unexplainable need by Colorado Pitchers to hit Oakland hitters ensured that the Rockies would lose their second game in as many days to the A's.

Doug Pensinger

Jorge De La Rosa started today's game and after starting off by giving up back to back singles, he alternated outs with a walk to Josh Donaldson and then he plunked Michael Choice to drive in a run. He then sandwiched a double play between two more walks before being relieved due to his pitch count already being in the 50s.

Josh Sullivan finished off the second but then gave way to Tyler Chatwood who made the third inning an exercise in frustration. Two walks and two more hit batters turned two singles by the A's into three more runs and the Rockies bats were unable to comeback as they ended up only scoring two runs while the bullpen let three more A's runs leak in one at a time in the sixth that included a wild pitch, the seventh via home run, and the ninth when a pitcher attempting to cover first base interfered with Henry Wrigley trying to catch the ball for an out.

On the base paths, Yorvit Torrealba got caught between first and second in the seventh when the Rockies had a promising start to the inning with two back to back singles from him and Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer eventually scored on an Arenado ground out but that was all there was to the attempted rally.

Bright spots: Nolan Arenado had two RBIs with a home run off of A's starter A. J. Griffin in the second and the aforementioned RBI ground out that was a good piece of disciplined hitting. Dexter Fowler returned to the lineup after hurting his ankle a few days ago and the Rockies announcers stated he was back to being 100%. Also, Todd Helton saw his first action of the spring and, while he went 0-2, it was good hearing his name called.

Only 28 more days until these games start counting! Go Rockies!
