Giants 9, Rockies 6: Colorado Coughs Up Four-Run Lead

New, 20 comments

Rockies take early 6-2 lead against Tim Lincecum and the Giants, but three relievers combine to give up five runs on nine hits in second straight loss to San Francisco this season.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss takes the ball from relief pitcher Adam Ottavino, who gave up two runs on three hits in a third of an inning in the Rockies 9-6 loss to the Giants at AT&T Park.

It was all looking good for the Rockies in the early going at AT&T Park, with the game tied 1-1 with two outs in the bottom of the second, Juan Nicasio drew a walk from Tim Lincecum to extend the inning. Dexter Fowler followed up with a two-run double to give the Rockies a 3-1 lead, which was extended on Josh Rutledge's two-run single that gave the Rockies a 5-1 lead through an inning and a half.

The Giants got a run back in the bottom of the second on Marco Scutaro's run-scoring hit, but the Rockies lead was extended back to four on Troy Tulowitzki's third home run of the year, a solo shot off Lincecum in the fifth.

Walt Weiss elected not to pinch hit for Nicasio in the sixth, sending him back out to pitch the bottom of the inning, and that's when the wheels fell off for the Rockies. Nicasio promptly walked the first two Giants hitters in the sixth before being replaced by Adam Ottavino, who gave up a three-run home run to Brandon Crawford, cutting the Rockies lead to 6-5. Hunter Pence's RBI single against Matt Belisle tied the game later in the inning.

Both teams got through the seventh fairly cleanly, and Weiss again showed faith in his pitcher and sent Belisle to the mound to pitch the bottom of the eighth. Just like it did with Nicasio in the sixth, the decision backfired. Belisle gave up a double to Andres Torres and a go-ahead RBI single to Angel Pagan before being replaced by Wilton Lopez. Lopez allowed three more hits to the Giants, which allowed them to stretch the lead to 9-6.

Sergio Romo closed out the ninth with ease, giving the Giants the series win.

The Rockies will try to salvage a game in tomorrow's series finale as Jeff Francis takes on fellow southpaw Barry Zito.
