High-A Modesto - L 9-4 (3-4)
Before Wednesday night's game, the Modesto Nuts were second in the CAL League in team ERA, but their good pitching vanished as the Nuts ran into a buzzsaw in Rancho Cucamonga. Chris Jensen gave up four earned runs in five innings pitched, only to see Russell Brewer come in later and allow another four earned runs in only 1.2 innings.
Jordan Ribera blasted a long home run in the fourth inning, it was his third of the season. Trevor Story (#3 PuRP) hit a meaningless homer in the ninth, his first in a Modesto uniform. Trevor is scuffling, hitting .136 with 12 strikeouts. Will Swanner (#5 PuRP) was given the night off as he has struggled early this season going 1-for-14 with 10 strikeouts.
Low-A Asheville - W 6-1 (5-2)
Lead by a solid team pitching effort, the Tourists won by a score of 6-1, giving them their second winning series of the year. T.J. Oakes had a solid five inning start, allowing only one earned run on six hits and four strikeouts. Oakes produced most of his outs via the groundball, generating six against a single flyball out. Alving Mejias was impressive in relief with four K's in three innings and a 3-to-1 groundball rate.
Kyle Von Tungeln was a catalyst for the Tourists at the top of the order with a walk, a triple and a run scored. Outfielder Julian Yan (#26 PuRP) had a strong effort going 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk. Yan raised his season average to .280 after Wednesday's game. Rosell Herrera (#16 PuRP) was held hitless for the first time this year breaking his six-game hitting streak. Rosell is batting .263/.353/500 on the young season. Matt Wessinger drove in two RBI on the night including one from a suicide squeeze bunt in the fifth inning.
