Tonight's game was a frustrating one for the Colorado Rockies, as they went down quietly against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Three Phoenicians crossed the plate, compared to only two Denverites. The game was characterized by a lot of poor contact and sloppy play from both teams, as both teams left runners stranded and committed errors. The big blow in game came from a mammoth Paul Goldschmidt two run home run that scraped yellow paint off the top of the left field foul pole.
Jorge De La Rosa was largely solid, inducing a number of weak grounders. The Diamondbacks managed seven hits and three walks, but grounded into three double plays. Jorge only struck out one, but his six innings of three run ball weren't bad; the only solid contact off him was Goldschmidt's prodigious swat. Edgmer Escalona and Wilton Lopez provided two innings of scoreless relief, but the offense couldn't bail the team out.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Rockies let a number of opportunities slip through their fingers. The Rockies were one for eleven with runners in scoring position. Especially egregious was the fifth inning, when Dexter Fowler singled and Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki walked to load the bases with one out. Michael Cuddyer promptly struck out and Ryan Wheeler grounded harmlessly to second.
Cargo was a messy 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. The only well struck ball was a double to right center by Troy Tulowitzki in the 7th that drove in Eric Young.
The Rockies will try to forget this one and come back strong tomorrow. Same time same place; hopefully the bats come alive.
