Juan Nicasio had trouble early, throwing 30 pitches in the first inning, but settled down and used the strong defense behind him to eventually go six innings, allowing two runs while striking out two and allowing nine total base runners. Wily Peralta of the Brewers didn't fare as well, giving up four runs in five and one third innings. However, it was the Brewers bullpen that faltered down the stretch, with Milwaukee closer John Axford turning a one-run game into a four-run lead for the Rockies, allowing a base hit, a home run, another home run, and two more hits before being pulled with two outs in the ninth.
The early season power of the Rockies offense continued tonight with Wilin Rosario providing his first home run of the season after Tulo walked to lead off the second. The Brewers came back to tie it in the third when they finally turned Nicasio's struggles into runs. First Rickie Weeks homered and then, after a couple of hits, Alex Gonzalez hit an RBI single to score Braun. Fortunately, Aramis Ramirez doesn't have a TV nor the ability to read apparently, as he tried to score from second and Cargo promptly threw him out at home. Some small ball got the Rockies two runs in the fifth when Reid Brignac and EY Jr. both got RBIs and the Rockies finally got a non-home run extra base hit. A Braun RBI double in the seventh off of Chris Volstad made the game close again until the Rockies broke it open in the final frame. Of note, Cargo had his third home run in as many games taken away when Gomez made a leaping catch at the wall in center field.
