On the heels of two impressive starts, Tyler Chatwood's chances of joining the Rockies' rotation in a more permanent capacity took a step back. Though he demonstrated solid control and was getting balls on the ground, Chatwood allowed 11 hits over five innings, leading to seven runs allowed over that time. Michael Solbach allowed another run in his Sky Sox debut, but the majority of the remaining damage came off of Nick Schmidt, who was touched for right hits over an inning and a third, including two home runs.
Charlie Culberson's two run homer was the most notable offense highlight of the game. The only other extra base hit was a double from Corey Dickerson, one of two hits. Matt McBride and Lars Davis also had two hit games. DJ LeMahieu didn't get a hit for the first time in what seems like years, but did knock in a run.
The Drillers only managed four hits. Two came off the bat of Angelys Nina, who also walked. A double from Joey Wong and a single by Jaron Shepard was all else that could be achieved.
Starter Tim Gustafson allowed six hits and two walks over six innings. Both of his runs were unearned, but they crossed as the result of a throwing error committed by Gustafson himself. Relievers Tim Sexton and Juan Gonzalez each gave up another run in relief.
Chris Jensen picked up his first win of the season in an excellent outing. He lasted eight innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three. Nelson Gonzalez finished out the final inning, preserving the shutout.
Trevor Story continued to break out of his slump, leading the Modesto offense. He doubled twice and knocked in two of the team's runs. Harold Riggins also doubled as one of two hits. Sam Mende was the final two-hit player, while Ryan Casteel reached twice via the walk. Taylor Featherston and Juan Crousset knocked in runs.
Broyles' outing in Asheville was very similar to Chatwood's with the Sky Sox. Five innings, eleven hits allowed and seven runs crossing the plate, all while managing decent control and inducing the groundball. Ryan Arrowood was unable to stop the bleeding, allowing three more runs over his two innings. Jesse Meaux finally got the game under control, but it was too much for the Asheville offense to overcome.
Rosell Herrera continued his excellent season, going three for three with two walks. Dillon Thomas hit his first home run of the year, a three-run shot. He batted in five of the seven Asheville runs, the others coming on a ninth inning double. Derek Jones also had two hits. Tom Murphy had an uncharacteristically poor game, striking out three times with one hit.
