Despite the fact that the Rockies were facing Stephen Strasburg on the road, tonight's game had the ability to go either way- a fact that was proven by the tight, low score. Ultimately, Ian Desmond's solo home run in the seventh against Manuel Corpas proved to be the difference maker.
Given the pitcher on the mound, the offense can't be blamed too much for dropping the game, but it is frustrating to see the team drop below .500 for the first time since opening day. The biggest culprit according to WPA was Nolan Arenado (-.176), but it is hard to win when you are facing a dominant pitcher. Strasburg struck out 9 batters in 7 innings. His only significant mistakes were in the third inning, when he hit Josh Rutledge with a pitch, and gave up a single to DJ LeMahieu which allowed Rutledge to score.
Meanwhile, Tyler Chatwood was nothing short of spectacular. He allowed 1 run on four hits and two walks. The hardest hit ball that he allowed was the Ryan Zimmerman double which scored Anthony Rendon. Chatwood has not allowed more than two runs in a game since April 24th, and his ERA dropped down to 2.22 over 44.2 innings pitched at the major league level this season.
