Game Wrap: Rockies 12, Reds 4

New, 178 comments

The "Great American Small Park" finally lived up to its nickname as seven total home runs were hit in this game, six by the Rockies.

Joe Robbins

A game that was close through six innings, ended up in a Rockslide after a three-run seventh and a three-run eighth by Colorado. The Rockies offense was anchored by Carlos Gonzalez, three home runs, and Troy Tulowitzki, two home runs, but also got contributions from everyone except Eric Young Jr. and Wilin Rosario (a combined 0-10 with one walk).

Cargo started the scoring for the Rockies with a solo shot in the first. The lead was soon erased by the Reds who got their only home run of the game in the bottom of the first and took a four to one lead. The Rockies bats were relentless though, scoring two on a Tulo home run in the third and three on a Cargo home run in the fourth. Cargo's home run was a monster shot to right center that went 475 feet, longest home run in the majors according to a source from the game thread. This gave the Rockies a six to four lead that was built on in the later innings.

Todd Helton joined the home run party by hitting a two run homer in the seventh before Jordan Pacheco earned the only non-home run RBI for Colorado with a pinch hit double. In the eighth inning, Cargo and Tulo continued the home run parade with back to back home runs for the final score of twelve to four.

In possibly his last start for the Rockies, John Garland struggled early, but ended up with a typical Garland outing on the year. After giving up four runs in the first, he settled down and went five additional innings without giving up a run. In fact he only allowed one base runner after the first. Other notable Rockies include Nolan Arenado going four for six at the plate and Adam Ottavino pitched two scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 1.72.
