Padres 6, Rockies 5: Rockies go down in extra inning affair

It took them seven tries, and tonight it took them 12 innings, but the Padres have won their first game of the year against the Rockies.

Dustin Bradford

Wilin Rosario wanted to make sure that the Padres had to work for their first win of the season against the Rockies. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, he belted a two-run homer to tie the game for the Rockies, after the offense had been quieted by Andrew Cashner.

Cashner held the Rockies offense to three runs on three hits and two walks. He allowed only a walk to Michael Cuddyer through the first three innings before the Rockies finally got their first hit in the fourth inning. Nolan Arenado hit a line drive to center field for a double, and two batters later Cuddyer repeated that feat to double in Arenado. The third run of the game game after DJ LeMahieu stole third base and then came home after an errant throw by Nick Hundley.

Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki, who combined for five home runs in last nights game, went hitless tonight in 12 plate appearances, with only Tulowitzki reaching base via walk.

Meanwhile, Chacin's home woes continue. In 5.1 innings of work, he allowed 5 runs (all earned) to score on 7 hits and 2 walks. Since his return from the disabled list, Chacin has found success on the road but not at home. Since May, he has allowed fewer than 5 runs at home only once.

The Padres' go-ahead run in the 12th came amidst heavy traffic and two missed calls from the umpires that really wouldn't have changed the outcome. After fielding a Yasmani Grandal grounder, Nolan Arenado went for the double play. However, he threw to first base before he tagged third for the force out, though this out was still called. Then, Grandal was called safe at first, even though the throw beat him. Chase Headley was able to score the go-ahead run which the Rockies were not able to counter in the bottom of the inning.

Y'all are talkative. Join me again tomorrow for round two, if you dare. I'm pretty sure I might have the worst game thread record on the PR writing staff.
