With thirteen hits and five walks, the Rockies had at least two base runners in each of the first eight innings but were only able to get five runs. They did a nice job of manufacturing runs: scoring on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch while using bunts to move runners over and to get a base hit. The big hit just would not come though as only two of the hits were for extra bases.
Fortunately, Jorge De La Rosa was solid for Colorado. He was not overly efficient however and after giving up his only two earned runs on a dinger to Carlos Quentin in the sixth inning on his 99th pitch, he turned it over to the bullpen. Quentin's home run may have been an out if Charlie Blackmon and remembered that there is a wall in the outfield and that he should also jump when he gets to the wall (he made up for it in the 8th with a great diving catch).
The relief team kept suspense in the game with Matt Belisle giving up a run in the seventh to shorten the Rockies' lead to one run. The former Sky Sox duo of Dickerson and Blackmon came together to get the run back in the next inning with an infield single by Dickerson followed up by Blackmon's triple to right.
Every Rockies position player got a hit in the game, with Blackmon, DJ LeMahieu, Todd Helton, and Yorvit Torrealba all having multiple hits and Torrealba's double being the only other extra-base hit. Ultimately the Rockies would not be denied with Rex Brothers and Rafael Betancourt shutting the door and preserving the win (with the help of a great catch by Todd Helton over the dugout).
A great, lively group tonight in the game thread, thanks everyone for the discussion (>1900 comments).
Rockies now 44-48.
