Tyler Chatwood allowed just one run on four hits in an eight-inning complete game, but the Colorado Rockies were unable to do much of anything against Los Angeles Dodgers starter Zack Greinke in a 1-0 loss at Dodger Stadium on Saturday.
Chatwood surrendered a leadoff double to Skip Schumaker to start the game and hit the very next batter, Mark Ellis, with a pitch. The 23-year-old right-hander settled in from there. Though the Dodgers scored on a groundout by Adrian Gonzalez, they were only able to muster three more hits against Chatwood.
Unfortunately for the Rockies, Greinke was a bit better, one-upping Chatwood to the tune of a complete-game shutout. Greinke struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits and a walk en route to his first complete game since 2010.
Greinke was perfect through 4 1/3, until Todd Helton hit an opposite-field single to give the Rockies their first baserunner. Colorado only had two more of those for the remainder of the game. Jonathan Herrera singled to lead off the sixth inning but was thrown out trying to steal. After Todd Helton walked to start the eighth, pinch-runner Josh Rutledge stole second, giving the Rockies their first runner in scoring position.
Colorado was unable to take advantage, as Greinke retired Nolan Arenado, Yorvit Torrealba and Herrera in order to finish the eighth and did the same to Charlie Blackmon, Dexter Fowler and DJ LeMahieu in the ninth.
The Rockies will attempt to earn a much-needed split on Sunday behind Jhoulys Chacin. He'll oppose Ricky Nolasco, who was brilliant in his first start since being traded to the Dodgers.
