Cubs 3, Rockies 1: Rockies hit snooze button, accidentally sleep through first game back

New, comments

Another spectacular performance from Jorge De La Rosa as well as Dexter Fowler's 11th home run of the year were put to waste as the Rockies offense struggled to come to life in Friday's 3-1 loss.

USA TODAY Sports

The Rockies had a rather inauspicious return from the All-Star break as they fell to the Cubs 3-1. This was hardly what you like to see from a team which features 3 All-Stars at the heart of its lineup. The Chicago Cubs pitching staff yielded only 5 hits and four walks.

Outside of a Dexter Fowler solo shot (his 11th of the year), the offense seemed phased by Jeff Samardzija and the rest of the Cubs pitching staff. Despite (or perhaps because of) knowing how important this game, and this homestand is, the offense and baserunning were woefully ineffective. Fowler was picked off in the first inning, after a four-pitch walk. The team did not reach base at all in five of the innings played. Cuddyer killed a potential rally and ended the game as he grounded into a double play with runners on first and third.

For his part, Jorge De La Rosa pitched six innings of 5-hit, one-run ball. For the ninth time this season, Jorge De La Rosa has allowed one or fewer runs. For the fourth time, he did not factor into the decision. The defense had a good night, capped by Nolan Arenado's impressive defense at third. Edgmer Escalona and Rex Brothers each allowed a run in their innings of work.

In the scheme of things, this is one game out of 162. But it was also the first game back from the All-Star break and the first game of a 10-game homestand that, if successful, could allow the Rockies to bounce back in to the NL West playoff picture. The hole keeps getting deeper.
