Rockies option Jordan Pacheco to Triple-A Colorado Springs

The Colorado Rockies optioned utility man Jordan Pacheco to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday to make room for recently-promoted infielder Charlie Culberson, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

Pacheco has been unable to replicate the success he had as a rookie, when he hit .309 and had 40 extra-base hits, so far in 2013. In 199 plate appearances, Pacheco has hit just .229/.268/.298 with 11 extra-base hits. He hasn't been able to find a home defensively, which complicates matters even more.

Pacheco's best hope for returning to -- and sticking in -- the big leagues will probably be as a catcher. The Rockies don't have a commitment to backup Yorvit Torrealba beyond this season, and legitimate help within the organization aside from Pacheco is still a couple of years away.

As for Culberson, he'll provide a similar type of versatility that the Rockies were hoping to get out of Pacheco, but hopefully with a more adequate bat. Culberson has spent time all over the diamond in Colorado Springs while hitting .310/.338/.524.
