Rockies 10, Pirates 1: The offense monster hath awaken

Led by Wilin Rosario, the Rockies shook Francisco Liriano for his worst start of the year as they returned home to the friendly confines of Coors Field.

The Rockies took a contest that, on paper, should not have gone their way, and turned the tables to score 10 runs in the first three innings against Clint Hurdle and the first place Pittsburgh Pirates. The Rockies offense seemed happy to be back at their own stomping ground, and were led by Wilin Rosario's 3-hit, 4-RBI night.

The Rockies did not wait to begin their offensive onslaught. After Liriano allowed a single and a walk to DJ LeMahieu and Troy Tulowitzki, Michael Cuddyer drove in LeMahieu for the first run of the game. Wilin Rosario then snapped a line drive on the second pitch he saw to double in Cuddyer and Tulowitzki. Todd Helton followed up with an RBI single of his own to complete the four-run first inning.

In the second inning, the Rockies hit starting pitcher Francisco Liriano for 5 more runs. Rosario hit his sixteenth homer of the year on a ball that looked like it was in a hurry to get out to the left field bleachers. Rosario tacked on one more hit in the fifth and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Liriano left the game with one out in the third, but was charged with one more run. His pitching line--10 runs off of 12 hits and 2 walks--is by far his worst start of the year.

Jorge De La Rosa was far from sharp, but was proficient at limiting the damage. He allowed four consecutive singles to lead off the game, though none of these scored. He allowed one run to score in the second when Jordy Mercer hit a sacrifice fly to Dexter Fowler to drive in second baseman Neil Walker.

Though he did settle down after the first two innings, he did leave after five innings after 106 pitches. Ottavino allowed one hit and struck out three in his two innings of work, and Escalona and Brothers both pitched excellent innings.
