Rockies minor league report 8/21: Jon Gray K's 10 in 4th Modesto start

Modesto, W 11-5 (66-61)
Jon Gray put up another strong start by allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out 10 and kept his ERA under 1.00, now at 0.95. Ryan Arrowood allowed the other three runs on seven hits over the sixth and seventh innings, but Ryan Buch threw two scoreless innings to end the game.

Center fielder Tyler Massey delivered a big blow with a three-run homer in the fourth inning before the rest of the offense came through in the six-run sixth. Taylor Featherston, who hit a solo homer in the first, Brian Humphries, and Jared Simon drove in four runs on three doubles. Ryan Casteel and Jordan Ribera added RBI singles to close out the Nuts' scoring.

Colorado Springs, L 3-1 (62-66)
Chris Volstad threw an eight-inning complete game in the loss, allowing all three runs on a pair of homers. He struck out seven, walked one, and finished with a 15-1 GO-FO.

Tim Wheeler drove in the Springs' only run on a ground out in the top of the ninth. The Sky Sox struck out 12 times.

Tulsa, L 2-1 in 10 innings (61-64)
Tulsa catcher Tom Murphy hit his first Double-A home run in the fifth inning for the 1-0 lead, but starting pitcher Christian Bergman served up a leadoff home run to Randal Grichuk in the ninth inning. Bergman left after getting one out in the inning, finishing his night with 8 1/3 innings pitched and one run allowed on three hits. He struck out four.

In the top of the 10th, Cole White allowed a single, a sac bunt, and a single to give up the go-ahead run. Tulsa ended the game by going down 1-2-3.

Asheville, L 11-1 (59-66)
Hickory's nine-run fourth inning did in Asheville on Tuesday night. Matt Carasiti was responsible for 10 of 11 runs. His lowlights included Joey Gallo's 30th homer, a two-run blast in the first, and Alejandro Selen's three-run shot in the fourth. In that inning, Carasiti allowed the first six batters to reach base safely, including three consecutive doubles. There were also a couple of errors by the Tourists in the fourth.

Second baseman Juan Ciriaco plated the only Asheville run on a force out in the fifth.

Tri-City, W 5-4 (30-34)
The Dust Devils jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four innings, but starter Johendi Jiminian ran into trouble in the fifth. After giving up a two-out, two-run double, Jiminian walked the next batter and threw a wild pitch to put men on at second and third. However, Rony Rodriguez struck out to end the threat. Jiminian left the game after that inning, having allowed three runs on six hits (including a home run) and three walks.

Catcher Chris O'Dowd went 2-for-5, scored twice, and stole his 13th base. He was one of three Dust Devils to record a multi-hit game, but the team was 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position and nine men were left on base.
